i know it's been mentioned before about people not being able to dial out to some 800 (or other toll free) numbers, but what i've read has usually been stories of only rarely not getting through while most seem to work.

the last 3-4 days i've tried to dial no less than 6-8 toll free numbers and every one of them has given me the recording about being blocked from my calling area.

newegg (whittier, ca): (800) 390-1119 -- luckily they listed a local number (909) 395-9046 that worked.

ups (corporate is listed as atlanta, ga): 800-742-5877 -- no alternate "local" number listed

dhl (corporate in florida, call centers in houston and phoenix?): 800-225-5345 -- no alternate "local" number listed

dell computers (corporate in roundrock, tx): 800-999-3355 -- no alternate "local" number listed

sprint info services (corporate in reston, va): 800-829-0965 -- local number given is for corporate affairs not for the info services

hp: 800-474-6836

united airlines: 800-864-8331

continental airlines: 800-523-3273

bank of america: 800-432-1000

and the list goes on and on. almost all companies that have 800 numbers for reservations, information services, national sales/support only have an 800 number. if we can't contact them via this number, then we're SOL. as frustrating as some other issues (like caller id for some folks) are, i fear this is a crippling issue which really affects the core usability of Vonage as a pots replacement and it must be resolved.

Strange. I just now tried the Sprint and UPS numbers and got right through.

Interesting. I also just tried an 800 number and it also worked.
Could this possibly have something to do with your area specifically? I called an 800 number in Dallas Texas, from Raleigh, NC. No issues.

I tried all of the posted 800 numbers (slow day at work) and got through to each one.

Evil or Very Mad

okay, well, guess this is another thing to bring up when i talk to the Vonage techs this afternoon. every single one of those numbers gives me the blocked error message. it's been so frustrating... at least now i know other people get through and it's something perhaps particular to me.

thanks for the info....

ps. i'm in houston area, on 281 area code... if that matters. if anyone else around here can try some of those numbers that'd would be great.

1-800-THE-JURY is supposed to work in MA (only), but doesn't with Vonage ("The number you have dialed cannot be reached from your calling area. Eureka Networks 007"). It worked fine when I dialed it from a pay phone.

That is the first one I have never had work..I still have a 772 areacode in RI. I wonder if the payphone was using a MA based company.

I believe it was a Verizon pay phone. This is the juror information number in MA and so I'm pretty sure it works normally for any non-VoIP phone in MA.

Yep..sounds right. My old company used to be set up the same way. The 800 number only worked in MA...Caught an old girlfriend in a lie that way... Wink

fyi -- this is fixed. this was apparently a side-effect from how they rerouted my calls to fix my previous issue (the answer delay on outgoing calls). all my toll-free calls were basically being black-holed, but they fixed it and i can now call toll-free numbers.
