PostPosted: Tue Nov 22, 2005 1:10 pm    Post subject: problem with ATA 186 & LinkSys WRT54G - RESOLVED Reply with quote Back to top

I am a new Road Runner user in Saratoga Springs, NY. I have the standard issue RCA cable modem. I am using the ATA 186 adapter and a new LinkSys WRT54G wireless router, setup as :

modem->router->ATA186->phone

I previously had my Vonage account set up in Vermont with Adelphia using a Netgear MR814 wireless router and all worked fine for two years.

With my new setup I cannot get a dial tone. If I switch out the new LinkSys router for the old Netgear, I get a dial tone, so I've isolated the problem to the WRT45G.

The www.testyourvoip.com test reports that port 5060 is not available on the WRT45G. I assume that I have to set port forewarding for the ATA 186 but port forewarding only works with static IP addresses and I cannot figure out how to assign one to the ATA186 via the LinkSys admin.

Any help will be appreciated.

Bob

First, your Vonage adapter should be set up with a static IP address. Configure the adapter itself to use an IP address outside the DHCP range of your router but within the subnet mask (in a standard config, 192.168.15.200 would probably work, but experiment).

THEN, you can set the ports to forward, or put the Vonage adapter in the DMZ if you prefer.

Thanks, but that doesn't really answer my question. How to I set up the ATA 186 with a static address? I can seem to find anywhere in the WRT54G admin to do that.

Oh, sorry. I figured there'd be a way to tell the ATA186 to use a fixed address in its configuration screens or web interface, like most of the other adapters. I'm not at all familiar with that one, though.

I think some of the third party firmware for the WRT54G will allow you to configure a "static" DHCP address for a particular port or MAC address. Your other option, albeit clumsy, would be to make sure and plug in the ATA186 first whenever you have to restart your WRT54G, which would give it the first IP address in range. A bit of a pain, though.

Thanks anyway.

This problem can't be unique to me. Has anyone else come across this and solved it? Or do I have to go out and buy an RTP300?

First, check on the bottom of your WRT54G and make sure its not a v5. You need a v4 or earlier. The v5 is a whole different beast, unfortunately, and doesn't have the capabilities that the others do. If you DO have a v5, I'd suggest returning it and finding a v4 or earlier to buy.

Then, go to the following link and download the last link at the bottom of the page - this is the latest release of HyperWRT firmware for your router.

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=81

Unzip the file you've downloaded, and go to the firmware upgrade page for your router, and browse to the code.bin file that you unzipped from the download. Install this firmware and you'll now be able to set the ATA with a static IP, based on its MAC address.

Then you can do the proper port forwarding based on the static IP you assign. Finally, set the priority for that IP to "Highest" on the QoS page, and you should be all set. HyperWRT is rock solid and has been running on my WRT here for a few weeks now since last reboot. My Vonage works great behind it.

I have a V5. If I return it can you suggest another router? Finding an older model will probably not be in the cards. I can get DLink and Netgear easily at my local Staples.

Finding an older model might not be all that hard. As recently as last week, CompUSA and Frye's here both had v4's on the shelf - a fair supply of them. They're also readily available on eBay,although you'd have to wait for shipping, of course. Its worth checking for, I'd say. The v5 runs a whole different operating system and firmware, and is still on a release 1.0x of firmware, vs. much more mature firmware on all the older models.

Although some here use them, I personally don't think either DLink or Netgear is nearly as good a choice - not sure I've seen anyone using them successfully in front of the Vonage adapter, vs behind, and since yours is the ATA and not really a router, you definitely want it behind the router, I think.

I'll try my nearest CompUsa tomorrow. I'll be passing not far from one on my way to visit the relatives for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the info.

A bit more info for you so you don't have to get into the sealed boxes to look for version information. All you need to do is look at the first 4 digits of the serial number, which is on the outside of the box. You want anything from v2.0 to v4.0.

Known serial numbers (first 4 characters) vs versions / Chipsets:

WRT54G:

CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDFA = WRT54G v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 / BCM5352EKPB Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
