I just spoke to customer support on the phone and she told me my Internet speed would not be affected by Vontage phone use.

Can someone confirm this. It doesn't seem possible.

A number of poster have indicated that they don't find this to be true. For example, http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic9596.html , and http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic9453.html , and http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic9523.html , and http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic9493.html .

Vonage consumes 90K up and 90K down, unless you set "bandwidth saver".

If you have someone on the phone on a Vonage line, and two other people are surfing the web or checking email on, say, a decent cable connection (1+MB down, 256K+ up), then there should be no noticeable difference in the web surfing or checking email, assuming the router is working properly, etc.

However, if you have someone uploading a large file, or using P2P, then you most certainly will notice a big hit on your bandwidth for that application. Either that, or the Vonage line will get choppy (most likely outbound, so the other end will complain of poor quality) if your QoS settings are not right. And given that most of the Vonage supplied routers don't seem to do QoS well or at all, that's probably what makes this unbelievable.

Casual surfing while on the Vonage line = OK. Rep is telling the truth there, as far as it goes.

Heavy duty uploading/downloading while on the Vonage line = slowdown of heavy duty services and/or speaking chop-chop on telephone.

Interpret the words of the Vonage rep any way you like. Truth, spin, or lie? Depends on exactly what they said. But now you know the rest of the story. Wink

You're right, its basically NOT possible. It would be reasonable to say it shouldn't affect your internet speed "much*, but to say it won't affect it at all, is just plain wrong. How much *should* it affect it? Not a lot, if all the equipment is working correctly. At full bandwidth, the Voip connection is using 90Kbps bandwidth in each direction. I've seen it said that with packet overhead, that 90K in real life might take as much as maybe 125Kbps in total bandwidth, so lets take that number. I think about the slowest standard broadband connection available today is rated at 1.5Mbps download. So again, lets err on the low side and say your connection can do 1.25Mbps instead of the full 1.5M. At 1.25Mbps connection speed, if your Voip connection is using 125Kbps while a call is active, then its consuming 10% of the available bandwidth. Therefore, you'll see about a 10% slowdown in websurfing speed. This may or not be really noticable to you, but its definitely there. Also, to contrast, my cable connection is 6Mbps instead of 1.5Mbps, and therefore my Vonage connection is only taking about 2% of my available download speed.

The upload speeds for broadband are generally much slower, with many at 256Kbps. At that rate, a Voip call while active is taking almost 50% of the available upload bandwidth. You won't notice that for normal websurfing though, as surfing the web takes almost no upload bandwidth - its almost all download from the webserver to you. You WILL notice the hit on upload if you use any of the peer to peer programs like bit torrent though, as they demand considerable upload bandwidth in addition to download.

Hope that helps...

-Gary-

My download speed is 3Mbps. I use the phone at the same time as remote control software to "Help Desk" others.

I consume a lot of LD time like this.

I work over a Citrix connection from California to Texas and I have not noticed any difference in its responsiveness when I am talking on the Vonage phone at the same time.

Even when Web surfing, we often are not working at 100% due to latencies that can happen anywhere on the trace route. So, during the time we wait for a packet from the web site, Vonage is sending packets and it could run into latency issues on it's way.

Vonage share of bandwidth is not always as noticeable as the numbers would indicate.

However, as Gary indicates above, uploading while Vonage is active is the most likely place to see problems. When your help desk work is confined to viewing your user's screens and running programs, there should be no problems.

I could see potential issues should you need to upload file updates to their system while you are speaking with them on the phone. This is where QOS is important, and while I have not had any problems, some users in some threads state that the QOS in the RTP300 does not work.

When QOS is working perfectly, the bandwidth available to the file upload will be reduced by the uplink leg of the Vonage call. It may or may not matter in your particular situation if uploads take a little more time to complete.
