PostPosted: Mon Nov 21, 2005 8:13 pm    Post subject: Caller ID problem with Vonage on 2 Line Phone with DSL Reply with quote Back to top

There've been posts elsewhere about similar issues, I just wanted to share my setup & experience so far to help others! I've copied this info from another post, but thought I'd do another to make searching easier for the next person..

I started out with an AT&T 2 line phone model #972. My setup was Line 1 is my POTS home phone # with DSL on it. Line 2 is my Vonage business # coming straight out my Moto VT1005.

Caller ID would never seem to work for both lines if they were both plugged in. If I unplugged one line, it would work, no matter which Vonage or the POTS.

I tried everything I could to make the caller ID work on both lines at the same time and it simply would not. I can say with confidence that using filters, splitters, 4 wire cables, 2 wire cables, swapping ports did nothing to fix the problem.

I then went out and bought an AT&T 4 line model #974.
On the first try it worked perfectly!!

I am using 2 wire cable for both lines, not sure if that makes much difference over using the 4 line ones..

Plugging each cable into the jacks it ends up being that the phone detects use on Line 1 and Line 3, but I can certainly live with that. I will experiment to see if I can get it to work as Line 1 & Line 2 by combining using a splitter, but my gut feeling is it might not, since I think it could be that there's some signal bleed from the POTS and Vonage line which might confuse the caller id data, thus explaining why my 2 line didn't work, but it's just a theory..

I also bought an RCA 4 line model #25414RE3 since I wasn't sure if the 4 line AT&T would work. To my surprise, it also worked right out of the box with no issues at all, using the same setup as above.

So the 972 model is going back tonight, and whichever I like less, the AT&T or the RCA...but am very happy to say that there *IS* a solution!!

PS - To the official Vonage support line of "we don't officially support multiline phones", I say that "officially **** eggs, we shouldn't have do the dirty work for you!"

I have a 2 line model 982 and it does weird things also. Sometimes when I pick up line one, both line 1 and 2 lights come on. Sometimes when I disconnect line one, hang up, I pick it back up and there is no dial tone. I have to switch to line 2 then back to line one to get a dialtone. I think it is the phone or the adapter but not sure. And of course nobody in customer support knows a dam thing and is no help.

Hey, there.

I had the same problem (funky behavior) with my AT&T 3-Line phone, and came across the solution quite by accident:

I had Vonage Voip before, briefly, using my Verizon DSL broadband. Unfortunately I had to discontinue, because when I transferred my number to Vonage, I lost the DSL service (Duh!). But for that 48 hours in between, the service worked beautifully with my AT&T phone. Now I have cable and am back with Vonage again, but this time my phone was acting like it's possessed by poltergeists. The only difference I could think of was that, before, I hadn’t bothered to take the DSL blockers (filters) off the phones -- this time, since I got cable, I had.

Today I plugged a DSL blocker (available at any phone or electronics store) right into the Voip router and then plugged the line into that. Now, not only is my 3-Line phone acting normal again, but the signal and sound quality is much better than before (just as I was about to call tech support about all the static and clicking).

I'm going to suggest that Vonage include a DSL filter in their equipment box for those who might experience similar problems.

I'm sure this will work for you too. Let me know.
