I am about to switch to Vonage from RCN, where I currently have the CPI bundled service, with three lines (home #, home office phone/fax). I would like to port my home number but not concerned about keeping home office phone/fax number. Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with this with RCN, and any advice in doing so. For example, I was thinking about dropping the home office phone/fax lines as soon as I get Vonage up and running and keeping the home number with RCN active (maintaining the CPI bundled package) until the number is ported. I'm wondering what RCN's response will be when they turn off the home number, leaving the cable/internet service in place ... do they default to the package pricing for the Cable/Internet bundle or will they bill as individual services? I'm just trying to think this through before pulling the trigger and looking for landmines to avoid. Thanks.

I moved my phone service from RCN to Vonage back in August when I first signed up with service.

I had a package bundle that gave me my internet, cable, and phone for one combined monthly rate (Their gold package). RCN gave me no problems during my number port transfer. About 2 weeks after I filled out the eLNP request form on Vonage's site, I was able to call RCN and they told me that they had received the port request for my home number and it was scheduled for a specific date.

The port went reasonably smooth (had 7 hrs w/o phone service as RCN ported out on time, but Vonage did not port in exactly on time). However, after the port is complete, you do need to call RCN and have them reprice your service but they can't do it until the phone service is cut over. I went from a $192/month bill to a $130/month bill just by moving the phone service to Vonage.

Maybe 2 months after I was working happily w/ Vonage, the RCN folks came out to the house to remove the beige phone adapter from the side of my house (as you don't need it for just internet & tv) while I was at work, but everything has been great.

No complaints about either RCN (they were very helpful and nice considering I was dropping service) and Vonage was pretty good considering the nightmares some have. But your mileage may vary depending on where you are. I'm located in the Boston suburbs and RCN has a very small footprint in my area, but they are better than Comcast (only competitor here).

Thanks for the input. I too have had no problems with RCN in the past from a service or support standpoint here in the Philly area. I was curious about how they would react when services start getting cancelled. I will begin the process to switch over this week. Thanks again.
