My family members all rely on cell phones w/o POTS lines so it would be a hard sell.

Oh yea, I've been telling about
Vonage
for a while now. I've been with
Vonage
over 2 yrs now & had less than a handful of issues. Installing the
Voip
router in my netork, dealing with power outages, setting up 911, and surfing while we're talking........ every obstacle has been a breeze to overcome. I look forward to bragging about it over another holiday dinner.

When it first crossed my mind to make this post, I said to myself "This is an open invite for those that have had a less then smooth ride.. to vent" <snip>
In my short time here, I think I've proven that I don't need an excuse to vent...
Anyway, I got
Vonage
'cause I thought it was a cool idea and I could save some money. I still think it's cool and I could save money but let's face it, the cost is in reduced service and limited customer service. As others have said the CID thing did me in. If that wasn't a big deal, who knows?
As far as observations though, I can say one thing categorically. This is not ready for prime time for the average person. My in-laws are not tech-savvy people. The reality is simply that I could never recommend thins service to someone who is not a "computer person" to begin with, and if they were, the recommendation would come with a lot of warning.
Simply stated: the very fact that this forum exists proves that this technology is not quite ready for the average consumer. When was the last time anyone needed a discussion board for a POTS line?

And it is not just about connectivity.

Uhh Dan, did you bother scanning the threads in that forum? I just did, and there's not 1 in 100 that have anything to do with POTS. They're all about DSL, fiber, T1's, and other related high speed digital data related matters. To say its a POTS forum just isn't true at all.

NO WAY!!! I already had 2 issue where I recommended
Vonage
to friends and both times were disasters. And the issues were not ISP related.

I cannot recommend
Vonage
for several reasons:
No local area code in Bend, Oregon.
It's quirky. Mostly works fine but goes through periods where it will only pass one side of a conversation.
Terrible, Terrible, Terrible customer service.
They flat lie to you when they talk about ACR, more area codes ect.
Perhaps if they worked out some of the bugs, picked up all local area codes and put in a responsible management team I'd recommend them.

Oh, and comparing
Voip
to standard POTS is like comparing a moderm PC to an abacus. So there.
