PostPosted: Sun Nov 20, 2005 5:06 pm    Post subject: TI Firmware Flashing made Fun! Reply with quote Back to top

After numerous requests for this important information I decided to put this out there again. Maybe our benevolent Admin will make it a sticky! I am going to test the links to the firmware when I post this, but in the future they may become invalid.

Read the instructions all the way through before you attempt this, if you don't understand something, ask someone who does.

For the RTP300: (Wired Router)
http://httpconfig.vonage.net/rt-11.1.0-r021-1.00.55-r051013.img

For the WRTP54G (wireless router)
http://httpconfig.vonage.net/wrt-11.1.0-r021-1.00.55-r051013.img

Click the link and download the file to your desktop. Don't try and Open the file with any kind of program that may pop out and say "Let me open this Picture file" or you will be sorry. This is no jpeg, this is the software that your phone adapter is going to run.

Just save it and remember where the image file goes. You will have to browse and find it later.

Browse to http://192.168.15.1/. You will be prompted for a username and password. Login with the following credentials

Username: admin
Password: admin

Once you have logged in, then browse to http://192.168.15.1/update.html. The device to will automatically redirect you to http://192.168.15.1/cgi-bin/webcm?getpage=../html/bridgeUpdate.html.

Once at this page, login with the following credentials

Username: user
Password: tivonpw

This will take you to the Firmware Upgrade page. Click on the Browse button to find the file you downloaded and click on Upgrade.

Because there is no page on the device for Firmware upgrade successes or failures, it gives a "Page Not Displayed" error.

Disregard this error, as the Power light should continue blinking rapidly. This indicates that the device is still upgrading its firmware. When the blinking stops the device should reboot itself and come back with the latest firmware. Log out of the device and log back in and it should say "Firmware Version: 1.00.55" in the top right-hand corner. The firmware upgrade is then complete.

Firmware notes -

make sure you are attempting this over a wired (as opposed to wireless) connection. Otherwise you run the risk of creating a nice doorstop.

Once you have the image file on your computer, disconnect the internet from the Vonage device. You have the file you need and you don't want the device checking in or downloading the firmware on its own, or taking a phone call during this critical and sensitive time in your phone adapter's life.

At the bottom the warning says Don't interrupt the firmware upgrade process. They mean it.

Make sure you get the right image, if your device is wireless you want the WRT file and RT for RP300

These instructions are only for TI chipset based devices RTP300 and WRTP54.

(Although, these instructions could probably get you by on the Vtech and Uniden devices, except for the image files.)

You can see what version you have by logging intot he routers configuration screen and looking in the upper right hand corner.

Good post, ColdGin. I have have 2 points to add.

The first time you log in (as Admin), if you changed the default password then you should use that password instead of "Admin", of course.

On some early versions of the firmware, 1.00.18 or 1.00.20 I believe, you should disable wireless functionality on the WRTP54G before doing the upgrade, or it won't work. I learned this from bitter experience. You can turn wireless back on after the upgrade.

Nice post but your links don't work for me. Any suggestions on where else I might find the image file?

Nevermind, after a reboot I was able to follow your links. Thanks.

An additional step that was necessary for me (going from .20 to .43) was a hard reset of the WRTP54G router (pushing in the little button on the back for 30 sec.)

Apparently the numerous update failures that the .18 or .20 routers have early on leave "gunk" that needs to be cleared out before a successful firmware upgrade can be accomplished. Worked for me.

I have the WRTP54G with version 1.00.20. I have been using this configuration for about two weeks without too much trouble. However, I have decided to flash to 1.00.55 because of other posts to this forum.

I tried to flash last night but was unsuccssfull. First I did not do a hard reset as staaver suggested and second I do not see how to disable the wireless functionality as turbo53 suggested.

I will try again tonight with the reset first but I could really use some help on how to disable the wireless functionality. The nearest thing I could find was to disable the SSID broadcast and I know this does not disable wireless functionality. Any help would be appreciated.

Under the WIRELESS section, set "WIRELESS NETWORK MODE" to "DISABLED".

The options are "Mixed", "G-Only", "B-Only", and "Disabled".

I know, kinda odd to have the on/off switch with the selection of wireless types. But there it is. Wink

OK, I tried flashing my WRTP54G again tonight from 1.00.20 to 1.00.55.

This time thanks to turbo53 and NateHoy I was able to disable my wireless functionality. And thanks to staaver I did the hard reset first.

But as firmware was flashing it seemed to be taking a long time and the progress chart reached the end and then started over. Then at about 25% I got this error message "upgrade are failed".Eek

Naturally I assumed I was now the proud owner of a $39 after 3 rebates door stop. So out of desperation I cycled the routers power and when it came back I bowsed to the login screen. It accepted admin admin and lo and behold up popped version 1.00.55. Very Happy

Thank you ColdGin for the the original post and the helpful links and instructions.

Some even better news is that I seem to be blessed with working caller ID as opposed to the poor souls here.

Thanks again guys this is the kind of stuff that makes the pain of emerging technologys a little more fun to endure.

jKramer:

Glad things worked out. But what you describe seems eerily familiar to me.

Just on an off chance, did you use Firefox (or another non-IE browser) to upgrade your firmware? I seem to remember somewhere that only IE was guaranteed to work properly with the manual upgrade.

Could be wrong about this though...

I have also read about the firefox problem, but using either browser can give you the "Update is failed" message.

In my case the progress bar went about 1/3 over and then IE jumped to a "page not found" screen. However, the update was successful.

I really wish they would give us all more access to the controls on these routers. There are some smart people here who could easily fix their own problems and advise others as well. Oh well.

I think you may be right. I know that when I backed up my WRTP54G's configuration, I saw a warning screen that said that backing up could be done by any browser, but RESTORING required IE, at least V5 if I recall.

I've never had to do a manual flash to it, I'm on 1.00.55 at this point, so I haven't tried making a doorstop out of it yet.

That would deeply stink for a Linux or other non-Windows user, or someone like me who uses Firefox by default, Opera when necessary, and IE over my cold, dead body (kidding!).

But, given the success above, maybe the upgrade works fine but the router just can't tell you about it for some reason.
