Had great service for first four days. Everything worked perfect right out of the box. Suddenly one morning no dial tone, no phone light. I think the problem is with my ISP ( Local cable company ) but when I call I get the " Contact Vonage" Syndrome. I call Vonage and they have the same syndrome "call your ISP".

More Details:
My ISP uses NAT so I get a 10.X.X.X ip for my Linksys. Vonage stated this will not work, however I have always recieved a 10.X.X.X address and as stated above it worked well for the first fours days.

- Other details: Even though Vonage stated that my number was port forwarded from Bellsouth I still was sending and recieving with my virtual number. Vonage sent me an email and said at midnight your port forwarded number will be live. Just do the reboot process. The next morning is the morning I had no dial tone. Still dont. Coincedental????

My equipment details
Router - Linksys RTP300 Firmware 1.00.55
Cablemodem - Motorola SB5100 Surfboard Firmware Unknown
ISP - Covington Cablenet - 4.0mb down / 512kb up

It would be a good idea at this point to run a test at www.testyourvoip.com and see if that works. Assuming that it does, it certainly sounds like a Vonage issue, given that it was working until Vonage implemented the number change.

Thanks Steve 48. I ran the test and if I understand the results they came back great. 4.0 out of 5.0. Any ideas on what path to take from here?/

Assuming that you've done the reboot, I'd say it's time for a call to customer support. It sounds as if something went wrong during the forwarding of your number. Let us know what happens.

I have the same issues. My Vonage router works for anywhere from hours to days. Then the phone light goes off and no dial tone.

I have called cust service 3 times, even got to level 2. They say the problem is that my Vonage router is plugged into my main router. Actually they don't say it is THE problem, they just suggest trying it plugged directly into my cable modem. The Vonage router gets a private ip address (one on my network) just like your router does. I do not understand the problem (and apparently they don't either) If it works at all, it should work all the time. I am not in a position to put the Vonage router in front of my network. I have tried that and it degrades my entire network bandwidth. Not much but any is unacceptable.

Everything works fine after a reboot. I do not use my phone much and if the router is down it forwards calls to my cell phone.

I will probably limp along and see if they ever figure it out.
Current setup:
Cable Modem->Linux router->Dell switch->Vonage router (IP 192.168.0.xxx)

Sorry to hear you too are having diffuculties. I am plugged directly into cable modem. I would like to install a hardware firewall but as this point I am afraid it will cause even more crap. Thanks for info and I will keep you posted.

My problem has been resolved folks. Thanks to a good tech and a little ( actually alot ) of patience.

See, what I failed to mention before is that Vonage sent me two routers upon my initial order. The one thats problematic was coded for my virtual number. Since I was waiting for my old number to be port forwarded from Bellsouth It never occured to me or Vonage that the other duplicate router was coded for the port forward number. I would think Vonage would know the MAC address of my problematic router didnt match my port forward number. But hey, what do I know! Anyway, plugged in other router and BAM, I have service. Seems fine now. Thanks to Siva the Vonage tech for helping me for 2 hours. After we were about to give up I remembered the other router was in the closet. Thanks again for hanging in there with me Siva.

What have we learned here:
1) Vonage will work over NATed connections. Doesnt matter if your router IP is private or not.
2) Use the forum - Live tech support is a joke in its current state.
3) Put your Vonage device in the DMZ if you use firewall. Mine works great this way. Just be sure to use another device as your route to the internet.
4) Use this site ( thanks steve48 ) www.testyourvoip.com to test your Voip before thinking it is your network setup.

I did not get two routers. I had a virtual number to begin with and my original phone number was ported over. I have had the problem from day one. I did have a tech support guy who had me reload the voice settings on the router. That seemed to work at the time. But about 2 days later the router was down again. I have to reboot the router about every 1-2 days.
Did the test at the testyourvoip site. I had 4.4
I might try one more call to tech support.

I have forwarded your comments to a friend of mine that is a network engineer. He responded with the theory that Vonage is the problem. He didnt go into detail but I will see him on wednesday this week and will post what he says.

I am also a network engineer. I am fairly sure it is vonage's problem. My network is never down and my internet connection is never down. I have a server that accesses a web server on the internet to upload files every 30 min. It logs any errors and there have not been any in the last 4 months.

The tech support said the router is losing its registration. For some reason it is not able to access the Vonage server to see if I am a legit user. He said it access that server every 18 secs. They want me to put the router on the outside of my network and I won't. I have other people using me as the guinea pig to see if Vonage works before they try it. They have the same network setup and can not put the router on the outside. Unless Vonage solves this problem they are going to lose business.
