When we had Vonage previously we had no problems sharing files between our computers with our Linksys router. We recently got a new linksys router (RTP300) for our new account and now we can't share files anymore. We get the error:
"<Workgroup Name> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

Both computers are set as administrator but it still won't work. I've checked the settings of the different folders and everything is set to share. This only started when we got a different router.

Any idea how to fix this?

The router would have nothing with the computers trying to talk to each other, I would look at the Firewall software you are using.

What Firewall software are you using? If NIS, you have to go in and delete the trusted network, and have it run the sequence for Trusting your new network.

Most likely your other Router was on a different IP scheme then what the new one is.

We don't have any firewall software that I know of. The other router was purchased through Vonage as well.

hi. i think you can try to ping both comps from each other. or check for firewall settings on each computer, the inbuilt firewall in XP maybe blocking. or you can try to access the other computer using its ip address.

I hate to sound completely ignorant, but it's been a long time since I've done much with computers like this. How do I do those things? And we were running XP with our previous router and had no problems, why would XP start causing problems with this router?

Amydidit,

For whatever reason, there might have been a change in the configuration. In order for you to share files with each other, a number of items must be in order.

1. All computers must have the same workgroup name but different computer names. Here is what it says on the microsoft website:

To change the name of a computer, to join a domain, and to add a computer description, use the Computer Name tab in the System Properties dialog box.

To locate this tab, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

How to add a computer description

Type a name or a description in the Computer description box on the Computer Name tab, and then click Apply to add a computer description.

Double check on both the computers that they have the same workgroup name but different computer names.

2. All the folders and files that are to be shared must be configured as a shared folder. (A shared folder will have a hand underneath the folder icon; please double check that the folders you want to share has the hand under it).

3. You should be able to go to "My Network Places" and "see" the other computers on your workgroup. You can go the My Network Place when you open up the "My Computer" icon on your desktop. It should appear as a link on the left side.

For whatever reason, one or more of the above conditions have been changed. Please double check the above 3 conditions.

Let us know if this helps.

I had the same problem when I used the WAN ports on both routers.

Like me, you only need one router and one DHCP service. As my signature implies, the cable modem connects to the WAN port of the RTP300.

Instead of using the wireless WRT54G as a router, it is used as a combination switch + access point. Here's how: A standard (not reversing) CAT5 cable connects one of the ports of the RTP300 to one of the ports of the WRT54G. Very important, the WAN port of the WRT54G is not used at all and DHCP is disabled on the WRT54G. This way, all ports on both routers share the same gateway and DHCP service of the RTP300.

I left the RTP300 at its default 192.168.15.1 router address. I changed the WRT54G to 192.168.15.2.

Now any computer on the network can see the exposed resources of any other computer on the network whether it is a wireless computer using the WRT54G, or a computer connected to a port of either the WRT54G or the RTP300.

It simplifies the network because all the computers are on 192.168.15.*

csnet, you've really confused me. I don't have a wireless router. My modem is plugged directly into the RTP300 and so are my computers. I don't have any extra routers or anything like that. Could it be that my router has a different address than my previous? Could that keep my computers from seeing each other? How do I check the settings of the router?

Sorry I misunderstood, I thought you had added the RTP300 as a 2nd router.

The RTP300 address by default is http://192.168.15.1 and the default username and password are both "admin" for checking settings.

Now that I understand that there is only one router, I do not understand why the computers are not seeing each others resources.
