I would recommend a UPS for the computer, if it helps with Vonage then you are that much better.

The problem may not be keeping power on your end, but all the powered amplifiers along the way. This may be an even bigger problem in an appartment or condo complex and no doubt some places are better than others.

I suspect Roger's servers are on UPS's and I do have a UPS on my end, well have to wait and see if I still keep Vonage during a power outage.

The issue isn't so much with servers at either end of the connection, it's the equipment in the middle.

Nearly every neighborhood has cable signal amplifiers connected somewhere along the way - these units get their power from the local utilities just like everything else does.

If the power is out in your neighborhood you may have a UPS powering your cable modem and Rogers/Shaw/Etc. almost certainly have power at the remote end but most likely the amplifiers in between won't. This will probably improve over time though - there's nothing stopping Shaw/Rogers/Etc from putting UPS's on their amps, just there was no business reason to do so before. If the power was out in a neighborhood who would want to watch TV?

just got a noticve yesterday form Rogers, cable bil is going up $6./mo soon, they can put that money towards installing power backups all over the place. haha

but yeha, your'e right, why would they have wasted the money to install backup power when as you say, no-ones TV's are working, so whats the point of having working cable/internet.. but yeah, as more and more ppl are going Voip, then they'll maybe have some incentive to change how things are..

time will tell.. all i can say is, keep a cell phone around..

On rogers, had the power go out, Voip still worked.

Hhave the router, Voip adapter and server on a ups

Voip will work if there is an outage assuming Rogers isn't affected. I was actually quite impressed.

The answer is, YES, there are Batteries in big green cases on the curbs and in strategic areas of the Rogers Cable Plant of areas that are Rogers Home Phone ready. This powers up all the equipment "in between" from your house, to the main headends.

How else can Rogers support the Rogers Home Phone service.
The only factor that would cause your internet to fail even though there are UPSes in the field is a fiber cut. Even then your cable TV, internet, Rogers Home Phone will be dead and the UPSes in the field won't make any difference at that point.
