According to tivocommunity this new box does not require a phone call for setup? Has anyone here, heard of this? True?

It's true the new R1 does not require a phone line at all.

I would only add that the R15 does have a phone jack and does make phone calls associated with PPV ordering. I would assume that you would loose ability to order PPV if not connected to phone line but Tivo/DVR services would still work.

I bought and installed the R15 without any phone service in the house at all. I was in the process of switching to Vonage and the R15 worked perfectly for the week I had it waiting on Vonage equipment to arrive and be installed.

The R15 seems to have no problems dialing over Vonage service as of yet. I have seen a few calls in Vonage activity out to Directv's 800 number. I have other receivers in the house so I can't verify that this was the R15 , but so far it has not shut the ability to order PPV.

My R15 also works over Vonage with no problem.
One reason to leave it hooked up to a phone line is (I think)
it gets updates via the phone connection. I am not sure of that,
as it may get every thing via the satellite.. Smile

I have several R-15s and it should not need the phone line for updates. All the programming data and software updates come down over the satellite. You don't even need it to activate the unit.

The only reason for the phone line is to make orders using the remote (PPV, special programming, packages, whatever) All this can be done online or over the phone without the R-15. I've run the R-15's with and without phone lines. Never a problem with either.

Hope this helps.

Ok, seems you guys got it to work. Have any of you got it to work wirelessly?

Router: Netgear WGT624NA
Adapter: Netgear WG111US
Sat. Receiver 1: R15
Sat. Receiver 2: (will get this info soon)
O/S: Win XP Pro SP2
Phone: Uniden UIP1869V

My R15 wont even register on the list of connected devices tho I've tested the adapter and it works just fine with my laptop and other desktop in the house. Thus far it has not made any calls out and I'm unsure of how to make it do what I want it to do. The router is Voip compatable obviously (=p) so I guess the only issue is getting the R15 connected to the phone itself?

Also my regular Receiver wont connect either, I'll get the model number in a few. I do use the PPV options on occasion and would love to get this working wirelessly. I spoke with DirecTV, they said it can be done but to contact Vonage for instructions on how to do it. Vonage Support representatives sounded like my question was out in left field.
