I signed up with Vonage this past Sat. I ported my number, and after reading the posts, I am a little less confident that this will happen anytime soon.
Anyways, my problem is that I was assigned a virtual number to use in the meantime that is not a local call for any of my friends or neighbors. So, in essence, I paid for something I can't receive calls on, until my number ports.

Can't I get a virtual number that works for me?

Thanks for any advice you could give me.

The only advice I can give you is to call customer service (866 243 4357) and put it to them. Don't bother with Email- Vonage isn't good with Email.

I had the same problem. For some reason, they told me that the temp number they gave me couldn't be changed to a local number, but I could still get a separate virtual number which would be local. That didn't make a lot of sense to me, but they had some explanation for it.

So I ended up having to activate a separate virtual number and keep it for a month, in addition to having to pay extra to have my old Qwest line forward to the new virtual number. I don't think it took too awful long to port my number. It was a pain that I had to pay not only the $5 for the vitrual number, but also the one-time activationfee for the virtual number ($15, I think), in addition to the charge for forwarding from Qwest. But all in all, after a month or so, the prices didn't matter so much because Vonage is so much cheaper than Qwest.

Could you have kept your new virtual local number and got rid of the original temp (virtual)number? They just gave me a new virtual number that is local. Why should we have to pay for that if they screwed up and gave us the wrong virtual number to begin with. Now I have two virtual numbers, plus another activation fee of 15. Great business plan, screw up and then get more money out of the customer. Rolling Eyes

I agree that you shouldn't have to pay for their screwups. I'd give them another call and ask for a supervisor. Bump it up the line and don't take take no for an answer.

Eek I was awakened by the police at 5 am.It seems I had the same problem.They (the police)got a 911 call from my old phone line.I called Vonage and they told me the same problem that i had a virtual # that another company owned?(is this like the normal scam? a one time fee i can just pay and be done with it?) They gave me a new virtual number and sent me an email.In that said e-mail I was informed of an additional charge for the virtual number?I've had this(whatever you prefer to call it,phone service,explitave inserted here?) for 4 days.I just got off of the phone with them and don't know if I should call back immediately or not, but looking at this forum I'd say forget the whole thing.(pipe dreams always end when you sober up?)All I wanted was some extra cash for the holidays so I switched.Would I be better off collecting cans? Just to say thanks for this forum.Sorry I ever even had to find it.Thanks to all the helpers and I feel for the victims and join them in total frustration and confusement.Can i forward the citation I'm going to get to Vonage since it'll be their fault next time at 5am?Or should i just call a lawyer(from a pay phone obviously)? Any advice would help since I'm still half asleep.

It's not a scam as you put it...
Vonage doesn't truly create new phone numbers. They are "leased" per se from other companies...
