People receiving my calls obtain my phone number on their caller ID but not my name. This presents a problem when someone has a need/desire to know the name of the caller before they will answer the phone. I contacted support and was told that Vonage does not transmit the name within the caller ID for outgoing calls.

And while I was also surprised by this, it is just how it works. It is a little misleading because on the Feature List of the Vonage web site it states "Caller ID with Name", which is true when you're receiving a call, but not so for those you are calling.

i personally prefer this. i don't mind my number being transmitted, but i don't want my name.

*if* they ever changed this so that it sent the name, i'd hope they offer the ability to send number and not name (and not simply block caller id -- then you would get filtered out by people who block anonymous calls)... it should be an option to choose if you want to send the name as well as number, with the "default" setting being to send the number only.

Hmm. I wonder if this is a technical or policy-based decision? I personally like to see the names with the caller ID and don't really care if others see my name for the same purpose. It would seem like this is something they could turn on at some point.

Names on caller ID rely on databases not on the company to send them, Vonage does not populate information in to the database. The only thing send when you call via anything is your number, the receiving end looks up the name in the database

That can't be the case. During my LNP number transfer, there was a period of about 10 days where both calls from my old POTS line and calls from my Vonage line both send the same caller ID number, as Vonage starts sending the ported number as ID even before the port occurs. During that period, if I called from my POTS line my name would be displayed to the caller, but if I called from my Vonage line it would not. If the receiving end was looking up the name in a database to display, then both would have displayed the same, since both were sending the same number.

The only thing sent over the telephone network when a call is placed is the ANI (which is basically the numeric portion of the caller ID info) and a flag whether that number is private or not. The receiving central office switch then does a couple things with it. First if the private flag is there, it sends "PRIVATE CALL" or some similar message to the receiver's caller ID box and a number of all zeros and a flag character telling the CID box the number is private. (The box/phone/device will display that in whatever way the device designer intended, e.g., "PRIVATE NUMBER".)

If no "private flag", then the receiving switch does a database lookup for the directory number received. If it is in the database, it sends that name to the caller ID device. If not, it won't send anything, and it's up to the device how it gets displayed. (Might display nothing, might display "UNKNOWN NAME", etc.) The switch may also use a generic area descriptor (based on area code) for a failed lookup. (My name appears as "INDIANA CALL" when I call SBC numbers around here.) All this applies only on Vonage-to-POTS numbers.

On Vonage-to-Vonage numbers, the call is never terminated on the PSTN, so Vonage is not bound by the technical limitations of the PSTN. Here, they can "send" any "name" they want to, since now it's simply part of the SIP message. What they do send is programmed into your MTA. I don't know about the Cisco or the Linksys models, but you can see what they have programmed on the Motorola MTA config page. What they program is your 10 digit phone number in the format "999-9999-9999" (as ASCII text). This is where the "number twice" comes from. One formatted version in text, the numeric version sent normally (and up to the display device how to format it--for example, on my phones I have the area code programmed in so that local numbers are displayed as 7 digits, so if I call my other Vonage line, it doesn't appear, exactly, as "number twice.")

Bottom line, for Vonage, or any other Voip provider to make caller ID (number) work is trivial. All they do is send ANI with the call setup, which is done for every call on the PSTN anyway. To make name show up, they need to add a directory number record to the telco database with your name on it. Vonage is not currently doing this. This costs them money in terms of access fees and labor costs to actually populate it. Other providers are doing it. Broadvox Direct reportedly does it and I believe that AT&T is doing it as well. Some cellular providers do it too, but most of them do not, so when you get a call from a cell (to the PSTN) caller ID name is usually blank or it may say "CELLULAR CALL" or something similar.

Now, after typing this for the twenty-third time, I'm going to bookmark this for when this same question is asked two days from now. Again.

yup, i agree it's up to the called numbers switch..

when I call my London Ontario number from my cell it shows "unknown name" when I call my Columbia SC virtual number it shows up "Cell Phone ON" .. so the names being decided by the number I'm calling to..

Well the explanation for this was detailed and interesting, but the remarks made by DallasFlier also seem to be cogent. Any explanation for his observation that calls from a POTS line would show CID name, but calls from a Vonage line sending the _same_ number would not?

I don't know that is weird, I have had it happen to me once before, I believe it was my sisters house phone, sometimes it has CID and some times its unavalibale
