As someone would who supports Voip networks for a living I find the QoS offerings on the RTP300 to be completely unacceptable. The options are so incredibly lacking. There is no way of prioritizing voice traffic as it leaves the box. The manual actually describes QoS configuration that sounds like it might be worth something, but the screens it mentions, and shows in screenshots, are no where to be found on the RTP300.

I think I may end up buying a Cisco 871 so I can prioritize voice traffic outbound to the cable modem using low latency queueing.

There is no excuse for having absolutely no QoS on the RTP300. QoS is ESSENTIAL for Voip to be worth anything.

I have no idea what you just said, but due to the fact that I have a RTP300 you've actually managed to frighten me... Eek Lol

are you saying you can't find the qos screen or what you found isn't good enough?

As discussed in the following thread, QoS for Voip is not yet implemented on the RTP300.

In other words, you have a bunch of buttons and knobs and switches and toggles, all connected to nothing.

"Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".

Because he's not there.

Exactly, that's why I'm using m0n0wall http://www.m0n0.ch/wall

Is it actually possible to use a different Voip device? I was under the impression that we could not because Vonage isn't actually doing Voip in a standard way. These routers are locked to Vonage and we can't use another one. Am I wrong?

The *standard* Voip devices, as far as I know are called ATA Devices.

The 871 won't act as a Voip device. It will only prioritize the packets from the Vonage device out the interface that goes to the cable modem. If you do QoS outbound to the interface that connects to the cable modem you can ensure that voice traffic is sent first.

The only reason this, or a Moonwall box, is necessary is because the QoS functions, or malfunctions I should say, in the RTP300 are pathetic. In short, the QoS functions don't do anything. The fact that they "aren't implemented" yet is just sad. This router should have never been shipped without functioning QoS. That is like shipping a car without an engine.

I was looking into that or SmoothWall for firewalls/routers rather than getting a new router, since it's cheaper and the WRT54G, which I was looking at, looks like it's been pretty much ruined by the v5 hardware anyway.

All I need is a case and video card for an old machine, and a switch to run the network on.

How "low" do you think I can go with m0n0wall? I have a PII/350, do you think that would give decent performance? There's really no indication of how low you can go in terms of CPU on their site.

PII/350 should be more than sufficient. Try to get 128MB of RAM... 64MB minimum.

I'm running on a PII450 w/128MB RAM and 6GB HD. If you need any help installing, feel free to PM me. Overall, m0n0wall made my connection more stable and my downloads much more even. Single file downloads easily max out my connection now. The packet queueing is a must for Voip, too.
