I looked for an answer to my question in previous threads, but I could not find one. I apologize if my question is redundant.

I have had Vonage for about 3 months now. After some minor tweaking during the first week, the phone half of my Voip experience has been more than fine. Unfortunately, my Internet connection has been much less than stellar.

Back in July a friend of mine built me a brand new PC. Prior to switching to Voip my PC's Internet connection was fine. It never dropped out. When I switched to Vonage and added the RTP300 phone router into the equation it has been nothing but problems ever since. It seems like the Internet connection drops if the PC sits idle for a while (e.g. overnight, during the day when know one is home...etc.)

I have an older PC that was sitting in a back bedroom collecting dust. I decided to try that one and see what happens. Naturally, the old PC runs fine while connected to the Vonage router and never loses its connection. Not knowing any better, I thought maybe switching out the network cards between PCs might make a difference, but of course it did not.

I have called Vonage numerous times and they have reset or reconfigured everything at least 5 times, but nothing changes. Sorry that this is so long.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!!! Confused Confused Confused

PS - If it matters, my ISP is Comcast. I have been on cable for about 5 years with absolutely no issues at all.

Hi Dan,

Hopefully, you will all find this a bit humorous. My "negative" user name was only negative in the sense that I had to re-create a name 5 times during the creation of my account because the name I chose was either to long, to short, had invalid characters or had been chosen by another board member. I get the fact that regular board users may take offense when someone slams Vonage and that's totally understood. I was not doing that. In hindsight, I can see why my user name may not have been the best choice. Ooops... Embarassed

So, just to recap... I wasn't publicly bashing Vonage via my choice in screen names. I was just miffed by the fact that it took me almost 10 mins to create a usable account. It was more in jest than anything else...

I had already read the sticky suggestion, prior to my original post and thought that I had answered the pertinent questions. I will do it again...

1. Your location - Lowell, Massachusetts
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Comcast Cable
3. Upload and download speeds - I'm not sure, does this information pertain to my situation?
4. Modem make and model:
Cable Modem = Motorola SB4200
Voip modem = Linksys RTP 300

5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 - What is an "adapter"? Would that be my phone router/modem? If so it is a Linksys RTP300
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC - Cable Modem--->Vonage Router/Modem--->PC
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc. - Constantly losing Internet connection, even though phone works fine. Lose it multiple times per day. Only way to re-establish is to reboot everything. (i.e. PC, Cable Modem, Phone Router...etc.)
8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston. I do not have any issues with the workings of my telephone. Should I still do this...?

I had the same problem. It came down to two things.

1) Vonage replaced my Router with a new, different Linksys router.
2) My ISP sent me a firmware upgrade for my cable modem.

It helped making my case to Vonage when, during my call, the call dropped and the guy had to call me back Smile

Yeah, but my phone works fine. It's just my Internet connection that keeps cutting out. Confused

It sounds as if the new PC is having some kind of issue with DHCP- as if the connection is expiring and a new number isn't being issued by the DHCP server in the RTP300. You've cycled the RTP300 several times. Have you also tried doing a factory reset on it?

My best guess (at this time) is that it's a computer problem.

Do you have a firewall running? If so, try turning it off.
If you run a constant ping on your routers IP, does it drop packets? (you can run a constant ping by using ping -t <ip address/URI>)
If you run a constant IP on your routers WAN IP, does it drop packets? (you can find your WAN IP by surfing to www.whatismyip.com)
Do a traceroute to yahoo.com, and run a constant ping on the first outside hop, and see if that drops packets.
