PostPosted: Tue Nov 15, 2005 10:48 pm    Post subject: New to Vonage- Dropped calls/clicking Noises Reply with quote Back to top

Need some help here, before I call Vonage. Just recently signed up to Vonage and the first day was great. Then come Monday I was talking to my wife and all of sudden the call was dropped. I called her back and the call was dropped again. I have mulitple problems with people calling us and us calling out with dropped calls or the caller not hearing us. Also every once in a while I will hear clicking\popping noises in the background. I am still within my 30 days and 250 min trial period and would like to get this fixed or cancel before I get charged for the setup fee. So any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Here's my setup.

Cox Cable- Motorola SB5100 Modem
D-Link D-624 is connected to the cable modem.
I have one PC hard wired and one laptop wireless.
LinkSys PAP2 is hard wired to the D-Link Router.
Call Quality is set to the lowest which I think is "normal". Have tried all three settings.

The overall quality of your service seems rather low, especially on the call from you to Boston. Is it any better if you plug your PC directly into the cable modem? Do you get similar results from the laptop and the hard wired PC?

I assume that the call quality settings that you referred to are the settings on the Vonage site. Does your router have QoS settings? If so, have you given priority to the PAP2?

No, I haven't tried connecting directly via the cable modem and will give that a try tomorrow. As for QoS it is not available on my D-Link router and yes I did get similar results on my laptop and PC.

You also mentioned that the overall quality of service seemed to be low, where are you gathering that information from, just so I see what you are looking at.

Thanks for your help... Smile

I think this is because of the router that is in between, in case with direct connection you dont have dropped calls, then you can assign static ip on pap2 and put it on dmz on your existing router.
hope this helps!!

I did forget to mention that I am using IP (Static) and MAC filtering on all of my devices (PC, Laptop and PAP2). If I am using static IP for PAP2, how do I setup the DMZ and will my devices still be secure from the outside. I will test the direct connection to my cable modem when I get home from work today. Thanks for all of the advise so far. The dropped calls and clicking noises can be extremely annoying, especially when I just signed up and all of my co-workers in the same area do not have problems at all.

the other devices in your network will be secure , And as far as pap2 is concerned, its ok to open up all ports for the voice to work fine, when putting dmz on dlink its only for the ip address of pap2 , so all ports will be open for only pap2 and nothing else.

Just under MOS quality from you to Boston it says Media Quality MOS 2.7/5.0 . That's lower than I like to see.

Just wanted give you an update for others that might be having the same problems. Any adding my Voip router to the DMZ seemed to fixed the problem. I have used my phone all that much lately, but so far no dropped calls and the clicking noises have gone away.

Thanks to all that posted.
