I've just received my Vonage package and everything is working good here in Canada on a Cable connection. I'd like to take the Vonage phone adapter (Linksys WRTP54G) to France in a few weeks and i'm wondering if i'll need to bring something else to be able to use the service from there. The place i will be staying at already has a DSL connection. I have no clue what they use downthere when it comes to the modems. So does anyone know if i'll be able to hookup the DSL modem in France right into my linksys router? Will i have to change any settings inside the router to connect to the servers.? Do they use PPPoE or something else? Do the phones in France use RJ11 connection?

Any help would be great.....

It should work in france, the service i assume would have a DSL router which already has user Id and password In France RJ11 works perfectly, they use DHCP

Hi,
I've not had quite good luck with this! My father took his Vonage phone to France and couldn't get it to work properly.

The France Telecom DSL modem only comes with a USB port. Thus it must plug into a laptop. The Vonage router has RJ45.

Any suggestions? I tried to find a USB router then put the Vonage behind it but haven't had any luck!

There is a gateway device that you can buy that will allow you to use an RJ45 device with a USB cablemodem or DSL modem.

Alternatively, if you get a straight-through cable, you can use a notebook computer with USB and RJ45 ports as a gateway. It takes a little network expertise but once set up, it's easy.

Are you sure there isn't an RJ45 port? I've seen lots of cablemodems with USB connections, but all of them have also had RJ45 jacks hidden on them somewhere. In fact, on many modems you can use both simultaneously as long as the ISP permits you to have to computers connected.

I had the same problem trying to get my box to work in the UK with USB modem ; it took me about 2 hours but I figured it out . Forget about getting a converter USB to RJ45 it will not work.(the reason is simple; the USB modem still has to pull its power from the pc so if you use the adapter and connect it with the Vonage box it will not even get the power. That USB to RJ45 is suitable for laptops that do not have any RJ45 port you can then use it to connect to routers or hubs ect...)Now Here is your solution:

You have to go the property of the USB connection(you will find this in network connections possibly under dial up. right click on it and got to property click on the advance tab and unable internet connection sharing this will automaticaly gives an IP add of 192.168.0.1 to your RJ45 adapter on the PC (assuming that you have one ) now if you are using a router with the Vonage adapter you need to change the router LAN ip to 192.168.0.2 . Now plug the router into the RJ45 on your PC via one the pc port on the router.(keep in mind that you have to first connect the router to your pc change the LAN ip bf unabling ICS 'internet connection sharing' otherwise it will not connect) lastly pug your Vonage box in one of the pc port as well; you should now have a dial tone if done correctly now if you are not using a router I know that the RTP 300 allows to log on and change the ip as well I have made it work also that way but if you do not understand to well how IP network you might mess things up there . by the way for that one you just need to change the default gateway to 192.168.0.1 with the LAN ip to 192.168.0.2 ...Voila ...
