PostPosted: Tue Nov 15, 2005 11:15 am    Post subject: Seek out new firmware or leave it alone? Reply with quote Back to top

I am new to Vonage and this forum. I hooked things up last Friday and for the most part have made very little use of the service. Once forwarding is set up of my Verizon line this will change, and I will certainly be hearing feedback on what ****/doesn't.

My question to all of you is whether I should go to any lengths to upgrade my firmware? It still shows 1.00.20. I saw it doing the flashing-power upgrade thing once, but afterwards the version showed the same.

Here's what I know to date:

1. Dial tone is quick and calls work on both directions, at least for the 1 to 2 minutes calls made so far.
2. Only visible problem is that "Provisioning failed" shows under voice status. I read somewhere that this is a problem with .20
3. Firmware upgrade attempts have apparently failed. I have also read that this is a problem with this firmware version. I tried the "turn off wireless, unplug phone, and reboot", but no update appeared. I also called Vonage to have them push an upgrade, but again no change.
4. BTW, internet and wireless/wired routing is showing no problems. Actually appears to be stronger and faster than my WRT54G v1.1

I have also read that the repeated firmware update failures on this box may cause it to lose stability over time. The other side of this is that the latest firmware updates also appear to have sizable problems.

So, should I

A. Just start using this puppy and let nature take its course?
B. Manual update it, if possible, to a later firmware version (e.g. .37) which may solve the auto-update problem?
C. Take this router directly back to the store and get something else because it is a serious lemon?

Any advice will be appreciated. I tend to worry these things a bit too much perhaps....

1. Which Vonage device do you have?
2. If I were you, I'd call Vonage CS (again) and ask for a "Tier 2" person to get the firmware pushed. Stay on the phone until you can satisfactorily verify that you have the latest firmware and that all is working well.

Sorry. Should have included that info.

I have the WRTP54G.

I already tried the "have them push it" once but the update apparently failed. Oddly enough, I have been reading posts from back in July that say this is a known problem with .20 (i.e. Vonage sees the update is successful even though it has failed). The major suggestion there is a manual update after a reset to factory defaults.

I have found the necessary files to update to .37, .43, or .55. A lot of posts suggest that .20 has numerous issues so this is likely necessary. .43 sounds like a stable starting point, and perhaps Vonage isn't pushing out the later firmware version that have identified problems.

I would definitely do a manual upgrade myself if I were you. When you see the power light flashing, it's trying to do a firmware upgrade. If it fails, because of adverse network conditions or any other reason, it will try again at some later time. After a few failures, it can scramble the device so bad that the only thing it's good for is a paperweight. Look around on this forum, everything you need is here, a link to the new firmware .55 image and instructions on how to manually flash the device

This all matches what I have been concluding from reading a bit more. It appears that I may want to do a reset to clear out any previous garbage from failed firmware updates. I have seen the router trying to update before but it never completes successfully. Perhaps a manual update this time around will clear it up?

(I would actually prefer to update it manually. This auto-update-over-the-web stuff bothers me in that *I* would like to be the one to decide whether an update is necessary for my particular setup and usage)

BTW, my setup is fairly simple: WRTP54G connects directly to PCs and devices via both wired and wireless. 2 in the first case and 3 in the second. Phone connection goes into my structured wiring punch down block.
