We just hooked up our Vonage this weekend so we're still pretty new to this (forgive me if this has been asked before but I didn't find anything when I did a search on the forum). We live just outside of Edmonton so we got an new Edmonton number since we couldn't transfer our old one over.
Last night, we called my sister in law in Edmonton with just 7 digit dialing and she got some weird number on her call display starting with a 905 area code (not our number - we have a 780 number). But when we used the 10 digit dialing, she got our correct new number on her call display. The same thing happened tonight when I called my husband on his cell phone.
So our question is when do you use 10 digit dialing and when do you use 7 digit? Why does the number come up differently on call displays when we use 7 or 10? It's not really a big deal but if anyone else is like me, I don't answer the phone if I don't recognize the phone number so I don't want people avoiding our calls just because they don't know that it's us (hope that made sense! ).
Thanks from a newbie! |

wow, thats pretty weird..
I'll have to do some tests tonight myself..
I usually dial out of my phone book which has all the numbers stored as 10 digits, coem to think of it, a couple weeks ago, I was ouit and my daughter called my cell from our vonage line, and it was a weird number.. but I'm not sure what it was..
you know, if you're seeing a 905 number, that may a be a good thing, this could possibly mean that we have a server in Mississauga now? as opposed to the New Jersy server we're used to.. (some ppl have reported that their CID shows up as a number from New Jersey where the vonage server is located, hence why we cant' call Canada-only 1-800 numbers)..
if I were you, for now I would dial everything with 11 or 10 digits, what vonage does anyways is append the 1 and area code to the number if you only dial 7 digits, there was a time you HAD to dial 11 digits for ALL calls.. you'll notice sometimes you'll make a call and it takes a few seconds for the call to start, but if you dial the 1 and area code it's alot faster.. |
