I have been using LAME to encode all my voice mails for over a year now. I have not had any problems until this weekend. Now all the messages sound fine in wav format but after I encode them they sound like a fax on speed. I went back and grabbed an old message and it was able to encode that just find it looks like some thing on the vonages side has changed. I called Vonage and talked to a couple of people and they said nothing has changed. So I tested this with lame on windows and it has the same problem. Can some who is using lame to encode mp3's run a quick test to make sure they are not having problems with new messages and let me know if this is just a problem with my account.

Someone mentioned on another thread that Vonage has changed their voicemail format to a new one that wouldn't work on his PocketPC.

According to that post, the Vonage voicemail audio format has been changed from PCM to CCITT u-Law format. So you'll need a codec that supports CCITT u-Law. I'm no audio expert, but maybe someone else knows if a codec for that.

Mine also stopped working on my Treo 650. I found a program from www.motionapps.com but I don't feel like paying $20 for the software when just last week it was free to listen to the old format.

I've been having the same problem -- Vonage voicemail stopped working on my Treo a few days ago. The explanation that Vonage changed their encoding is, I suspect, the correct one because it fits the facts. However, when I asked Vonage tech support about this I received the following denial from Mike.Munoz@vonage.com:



Dear Mr. Winkler

Thank you for writing Technical Support. We apologize for the delay in
responding.

No, we never changed anything on that regard. voicemail email
attachments has never changed ever since we had that feature.

Should you have further inquiries, please feel free to contact us.

Vonage has changed the codec used for the WAV files... I am now using sox to change them to MP3's... I have called Vonage and talked to them and they say nothing has changed but I have WAV files that show the change so I guess they just do not know what they are talking about..

I agree -- they don't know what they're talking about. And when I tried to explain that to them, they refused to listen. This is so frustrating that I'm just going to cancel my Vonage account and switch to some other service.

Codec is a speed of transmission. I dont think it has anything to do with opening up the attachment since you have already downloaded this on your device.

I would post the original email on there also so we can check it out.
And before you jump ship I would check other providers and make sure you don't have the same issue and that they have that feature.

I found a free program to play the new WAV format. It's called tcpmp and it also plays video's and mp3's on your TREO.

I know several who have got this to play the new format but unfortunately I can't get it to work on my Treo. The good news is the trial version from motionapps (mVoiceMail) does not seem to stop working so I guess I found a free fix afterall. Smile

I believe Vonage changed the format on 11/14 or 11/15 because that's when my messages stopped working on the TREO.

Got this e-mail from Vonage today:



In response to your email, I have provided the sample voicemail to the
engineers so that they can review some old voicemails and compare them
with new ones. They have established that the voicemail wave file is
being sent out a different way. This matter is being investigated,
once I receive an update, I will notify you.

In the meantime if you will like to listen to the voicemail on your
Treo, you can down load a media player from the following site:
