Hi

I am using Vonage at my home in India.
As you guys know that there is 1 GB upload and download limit in India (per month). . I have a question related to this…
I saw that the adopter uses 1 MB data in 3 hours (if I am not using the phone). Is there any way to stop this use? Because if I disconnect the adopter to stop this use of data then I can’t receive the call. Do you have any solution for this, so that I can connect the phone 24 hour to the internet without using the data?

Are you sure of the 1MB in 3 hrs. if not using the phone? (I don't know what it is, but I'm skeptical about that figure.) Where did you read/were told about that? Reference please.

Sounds to me like it's the adapter staying in touch with Vonage's main servers for adapter updates, time updates, etc.

I suspect so, but that's a lot of traffic for those functions.

that seems a bit excessive for simple comms like that. and a firmware update would be 3+mb, so it probably wasn't that unless that figure was caught at the end or beginning of an update.

hi

i got this figure from my online account on internet which provides the facility to find the use of the data for a perticular login period.
when i got this adopter in the usa i used it there for only 45 minutes and after that i brought the adopter to india. here i used it for 2-3 times and only for 20-30 minutes.
one day i loged in and connected to the internet then i connected the adopter for 3 hour then i disconnected and then i checked that how much data is being used. i found for the 3 hour it was 1 MB.
then checked it one more time for 1 hour and it used .30MB data.
i don't know why...

do i need to connect the adopter for 24 hour so that it can update itself...

Which adapter do you have? Is the usage downloaded data, uploaded data, or both? Have you tried disconnecting the computer during your test run to be very sure that the computer isn't involved in some kind of data transfers?

If I were you, I'd hook it up for at least 24 hours and see if the usage you've observed is steady. Even if it is, 1 Meg in 3 hours is still only 8 Meg per day or 240 Meg per month. That's 1/4 of your allocation, but depending on other usage, you may be able to live with it. Also, you may want to get with the people who call you and schedule certain hours of the day during which the adapter will be active and certain hours when you'll have it disconnected. If you can't fix this problem, you may still be able to get the service you need.

Interesting. Please keep us informed. We've had several reports now that the VT1005 uses a lot of bandwidth when idle.

The adapter will register the SIP every 30 seconds or so, not to mention the occasional firmware check.

May Vonage can modify how often your adapter registers itself. Various info is sent in a SIP packet - your IP address, phone number, and MAC of the adapter.
