PostPosted: Sun Nov 13, 2005 12:39 am    Post subject: SIP user ID? Reply with quote Back to top

Does anybody know what is the SIP user ID one gets at Vonage?
I was wondering if I can contact it directly from a SIP softphone (NOT the Vonage softphone) that, of course, has a different user id.

Normally, Vonage should not mind this, as this is different from their $10/month softphone (that can get "out") - this is Internet only, so "free" for them.

Thanks,
Mihai

PS. This is my first post, so please go easy on me Smile.

Come on, anybody? I can't believe nobody thought of calling home from another SIP account. After all, SIP was really meant to be called from user to user not from a POTS line!

The SIP username and password are encrypted, the average customer doesn't ever see them even in hashed form.

The password I understand if it's encrypted. But username?
I don't want to register on their SIP server (like linuxuser does, although this should be possible as well), but rather to contact my user (my home phone line) from another account with a different SIP phone...

I had no idea that SIP even allows for the username to be encrypted...

By the way, how do you know it's encrypted? Did you try to get them?

The SIP user names are not encrypted. They are sent in plain text in the SIP register message. For example:

15551234567

The username is just the phone number associated with that line, as one would expect.

Actually, you can see both the username and the password if you do a packet capture on your ATA. The username is plain text the password is an MD5 hash.

I *did* hope it would be something explicit like the phone number.
So it's <phoneNumberStartingwith1thenAreaCode>@vonage.com ?

Thanks,
Mihai

I was just playing around with a SIP client, and I managed to call home using an address of this format:

sip:12223334444@w.x.y.z:5061

(12223334444 being the phone number, and w.x.y.z my RT31P2's IP address.)

But, so far I've only gotten 1-way audio (outgoing from the RT31P2 to me) and my mom just told me to stop making the phone ring Sad

[edit-- added :5061 to the end]

I have never been able to get the phone to ring, but my adapter NATted. I suppose your adapter has a public IP address?

[EDIT: And was your other client on the same network? Or rather, can you give a brief description of your configuration?]

As a side note, I turn off the ringers when I am testing. It tends to keep people from throwing stuff at me.
