PostPosted: Sat Nov 12, 2005 3:10 pm    Post subject: Help connecting MN-500 Router and Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

I have a MN-500 Router connected to a Toshiba PCX2200 Cable Modem. I purchased the Vonage system and received a Motorola VT100V5 modem today.

I can not get any Internet connection when I hook all 3 units up (according to the directions) I get Internet and phone just fine when I bypass the Router.

I have found out I need to set my router up in order to work in this setup but have no idea how. Microsoft support suggested I buy a new router and Vonage support wants to send me another router as well.

There has to be a way to set this up. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Ross

Tell us a little bit more. If the setup works without the router, then why do you need the router? Please describe the exact setup that is working for you, and exactly what setup you were using with the router that didn't work.

I need the router as I have 3 other PC's on the network here at home. I went back to the original setup and simply plugged the Motorola Vonage unit into the router and made no changes at all. The phone system works. Is this setup right?

So -
Cable Modem connects to Router
Router connects to PC1, PC2, and Vonage hardware.

Internet works and so does phone. No idea if calling features work as we dont have Call display phone yet.

That configuration is fine. The only disadvantage it has is that the VT cannot give priority to phone traffic over internet data traffic, since it's behind the router.

If you have problems with phone quality because you use the computer on the internet a lot at the same time that someone is using the phone, then you'll want to look into putting the VT ahead of the router. I gather that that's what was giving you a problem. If you need to do that, take a good look at the current router settings, then get back to us.

I am having phone proirity problems and was thinking of moving the VT in front of the router for the very reasons you mention above. However, all of the installation information says to put it behind the router. I don't know why and I don't know how this configuration allows the VT to give priority to the phone call.

Can I use the following setup: 1) DSL line to VT WAN port, 2) VT to MN-500 router (via the PC/LAN port), 3) router to wired and wireless PCs and devices?

Do I give up anything by going to this configuration?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Generally speaking, the answer is yes, you can use that setup. What you may give up is the capability of the VT as a router vs. the capability of the MN. For example, if the MN is a very high speed router (I'm not familiar with it) and you have a very high speed connection, the VT may not be able to pass the traffic through to the MN fast enough. However, you can certainly try it, and I encourage you to do so. Since you have DSL, there may be setups that you currently have in your MN that you'll need to implement on the VT to get it to work as the primary router.

The alternative, since you already have the system working, is to take advantage of the QoS capabilities of the MN to give priority to the VT. Again, I'm not familiar with the capabilities of the MN.
