Is it safe???

I'd like to connect my ATA to my internal home wireing, being somewhat an older home I'm not exactly sure where the wiring enters. I've disconnected it at the street but there could be other entry points. Is there some way to test the phone jack for current so that I don't damage the ATA if I plug it in. To test I've plugged in a phone to the outlet and there is no dial tone.

Toners available that can be used to test lines but if you don't get a dial tone and you've unplugged from the Network Interface Box then your good to go.

BE SURE to label the Interface Box as well as inside the box with a warning to NOT PLUG IN the connectors because of sensitive equipment inside the house.

I put a strip of duck tape over my connections, marked them with the warning and wrapped the RJ45 connectors with duck tape.

Toners are great, but expensive if you only need it for this one test. You can use a cheap phone line tester like this one from Radio Shack. If you get no lights the house wiring is "dead" and ready for your Vonage ATA.
