How do I know when I need a firmware upgrade (flash)? How can I check this or better yet, how can I do this?

Assuming your computer is connected directly to your RTP300, go to: http://192.168.15.1

and look at the top for the firmware version. The latest is 1.00.55. It should be updated automatically.
