Post subject: Sound Delay with Forwarding, not ISP related
I've got my
Vonage
numbers forwarding to a land-line local number. I've read of problems with Delay in phone discussions when your Internet connection is bogged down or slow, in this situation I don't even have a
Vonage
Device plugged in, the line instantly forwards to another number, why are my conversations delayed?

Our forums have been locked down to postings during a server upgrade.
Give it time, as most members are currently hitting the old sites IP address (DNS changed also), and not this site.

It is surprising, but sometimes no one has an answer. Let's try this. Someone calls your
Vonage
number. It gets picked up by a
Vonage
server, is digitized, and enters the internet. The
Vonage
system recognizes that your adapter is off line, so it transmits the voice data to a carrier servicing the land line that you've designated for handling this situation. You take the call and experience delays because it _is_ going over the internet, and sometimes that's slow. It is a
VoIP
call, but it's getting transferred to land lines at both ends.
I don't know that this is how it's working, but it sounds like a possibility.

Thanks for your reply Steve, Just to make things clear. I've got the
Vonage
number on hard forward, not to just forward when the adapter is offline. I've got it setup in the config of the number to instantly forward to the landline, so the adapter (plugged in or not) never gets the call.
I expected a little delay, or sound quality degradation considering after all, it is
VoIP
, but this delay is quite noticeable, almost 1.5 - 2 seconds.

OK, understood, but hard forward or not, the call is being handled by
Vonage
over the internet. If it's a call that's local to you, I suppose that in principle a local server could recognize that the call is for a local
Vonage
customer who has it forwarded and immediately route it back to the landline system, but I don't think that's what happens. I think it goes over the internet to a
Vonage
server that's set up to process calls. There the situation is recognized and it's sent back to the local landline system- over the internet.
Perhaps a network savvy member could jump in and tell us more.
