My friend forgot her wireless network password so I had to restore it to the factory default settings and now there is no Vonage dial tone!

Here's the setup...

A cable modem is connected to a Microsoft MN-500 wireless router. The firewall is off.

The Microsoft MN-500 wireless router is connected to a Linksys RT31P2 broadband router with two phone ports. The "ethernet" light on the Linksys router is green but neither of the "Phone" lights are lit up.

There is one standard phone wire connecting the Linksys router to a cordless telephone.

When you call the phone number you just get a busy signal.

I've tried every ethernet port combination and I just can't get the phone to work. I accessed the Linksys router settings and don't see anything out of the ordinary.

All help is appreciated.... I feel terrible because I am house sitting and it's not my phone service!
Thanks!

I'm not familiar enough with your router or the Vonage adapter you have to troubleshoot the configuration, but try putting the Vonage adapter first in line after the cable modem, and run the wireless router off one of the ports of the Vonage adapter. That should give you dialtone - assuming the adapter is setup for DHCP.

I tried configuring the network the way you suggested. The phone did indeed work but the wireless network did not work. I am able to connect to the internet that way if I directly wire in to the Linksys router.

Are there any settings on either router that you can think of that might fix the problem? I did restore the Microsoft wireless router to default settings so it seems most likely that the issue would be there.

Thanks

I get a bit fuzzy on the router to router configurations, although many folks on this forum are set up that way and can give you more detailed first hand advice. How have you connected the MS router to the Linksys? I'm fairly certain you want to have the Microsoft router connected from one of the LAN ports of the Linksys router to the WAN port of the Microsoft router.

To communitcate with the wireless router, the computer you are using must use the same SSID and WEP/WPA encryption as the router settings. The encryption would have been disabled when you reset the router, and the SSID would be back at the default (if it had been previously changed). Check the SSID in the routers configuration menus and make sure that the wireless card in your computer is configured for the same SSID and encryption scheme (including being set for no encryption if that is how the router is setup) by using the Wireless Configuration Utility on your computer. Also, ensure that Wireless is "Enabled" in your routers configuration, if that is an option. That will turn the radio portion on or off. That should hopefully get you connected to the wireless.

The documentation included with the RTP shows the connection. The router should be connected directly to the cable or DSL modem. The Voip adapter should be connected to the router. Power-up sequence should be modem first, then back thru the chain piece by piece.

My documentation showed how to set up the router (ports to allow, etc) but I was unable to get that to work. In the end, I put the Voip device on a static IP, and put it into the DMZ of the router, working fine now.

Hope that helps? I don't have soft copy of the docs or would post them
