I have been with Vonage about 3 yrs and been complain sound quality with Cisco ATA 168 (voip become unusable with using P2P or bit torrent). I requested Motorola VT1005 (simpler setup) but got Linksys RTP300 instead. Anyway, Linksys RTP300 will here in a couple days but I would like to which setup have more advantage in term of voice quality - setup #1: internet - cable modem - Linksys RTP300 - linksys wrt54g router or setup #2: internet - cable modem - linksys wrt54g router - Linksys RTP300. Any suggestion is appreciated. Also, if got with setup #1, is there any settings in wrt54g router need to be change?? Thanks. |

Personally, I'd go with setup number 2.
First off, you'd have to set QOS on the port of the WRT that the RTP is connected to. Secondly, only enable one router for DHCP.
Setup #1 would work without really having to turn QOS on except in the RTP, but not sure what you're connecting to your network in the way of machines. If you use setup #1, you could put all your machines on the WRT, and this way voice would have priority coming out of the RTP in most instances. |

I'd vote for #2 as well. I don't think I'd want to put any sort of load on any of the Vonage-supplied routers. I get about 2-3 hours out of my WRTP54G using Azureus as long as I set max connections to below 30, which basically means I'm keeping the load on the router VERY low, and the silly thing can't hold up to even that.
Vonage has been unable to do anything so far. Hopefully they may find the magic settings to turn this WRTP54G into a real router, like a WRT54G or something, but for now they are focused on getting the Vonage bits to work properly, I think. |
