You can use a cordless phone. There are some issues with 2.4 GHZ phones. Do a search for the following thread. "Can vonage use the existing house phone wiring" It has extensive discussions and pointers on using your current wiring. |

go to www.vonage.com (installation tab).
any touch-tone phone will do.
you can use other phones in your house.
try looking into "Vonage Forum - The Vonage® Discussion Board Forum Index >>the cafeteria", look for the topic "internal phone wiring modification." |

It doesn't hook to a PC.. In fact you don't even need a PC, as long as you have High Speed Internet Connection |

Moto is right - it is really simple, un-hook your telco wires from your outside box and you are good to go. It gets a bit more complicated with a alarm system, but not too bad. |

I also use a 2.4 GHz and have no problems with the service. I have read that if you use a 2.4GHz Wireless Router that you need to insure that you use seperate channels.
I am using a V-Tech Model 2498 corded phone (w speaker etc) and the cordless hand set. This is a great Model if you looking for a great Desk phone for SOHO. Woth the $70 and beats the ATT and GE phone in quality accross the board. (also looks pretty good)
Is Anyone using the SoftPhone with a PC? Just courious how it is working? |

"disconnect the wiring TOTALLY from your access box so as not to have any voltage in your home's phone wiring."
Do you mean cut the wires coming into the little box outside the house coming from the Bell south junction box in the yard?
If you cancel service with a landline company such as BellSouth how quick is the transition to Vonage. Is it a smooth transition effective as soon as you hook up to internet cable? |

Dont Cut any wires. Simply unplug them and tape them up etc.
Not everyone has a smooth transition. It really depends if you want to play with the system. I have found it to be pretty good but it has it kinks that you might have to work on.
From a Home Phone stance I think it is great. From my SOHO use it is about 90%...the 10% is never at a good time
I am hanging in for the long run to try and work out any issues. |

Hail all...
Moto is correct there are 2 phone ports on the Motorola. But the second port is only for phone port 2. Meaning for the second line.
Phone 1 = phone line 1
Phone 2 = phone line 2 (no connection to first line/passthrough)
Inital hook up is easy:
Cable modem ---->WAN port of Motorola Device PC port out ----> PC / router
Hook up for phone:
Phone 1 ----> RJ11 phone wire (standard phone wire just being technical hehe) ----> Phone
Vtechs are nice phones. Although please be careful running cordless phones and wireless networks. Please ensure that they are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to channels on the router. This will keep you safe from feedback or overflow from the Wireless network and cordless phone.
Sincerely,
Nobody |

This is why I canned my 2.4 cordless and upgraded to a 5 gig VTech because I've transitioned everything on my network to wireless access and didn't want to have to worry about all of these devices interfering with my phone.

The transition can be as smooth as you want it be as long as your flexible an realize going into this that it's a new technology and that your going to experience issues (that I hope you help to correct by communicating to Vonage).
If you don't want to port your existing number to Vonage then you can simply place your order with Vonage and in about 5 days you should receive all of our hardware and setup instructions. Simply follow the advice given in this thread as to how to disconnect from the Network Interface outside your house, plug everything in inside and your all set. Then from this new phone can you call Bell South and tell them to go to *ell and cancel your service.
If you want to port your number then the most anticipated moment of telling Baby Bell to *iss off is extended somewhat. During the port transition you must have both services up and running. vonage will give you a temp number to use while the port is taking place. From what I've seen the port is taking anywhere from 15- 90 business days. mainly because the company they use to do the porting is swamped because of the new law allowing cell phone number portability.
If your not interesting in helping to correct some minor issues that you'll encounter being a customer then this service is not for you. If you don't mind saving on average $40 a month in phone service and can deal with the little problems, delay in customer service response times, short periods of outages then this is for you.
