I can probably deal with the minor issues but short periods of outages worries me. How frequent and how long are thes outages and is there a light at the end of the outage tunnel? I work for a newspaper and do a lot of my work from my home office and need to be able to have open communication between myself and the paper at all times. If the outages are very infrequent and not of a long duration, no problem, but.....

I am trying to deal with this problem of the outage issue. This has happened to me every other day for the last week. Yesterday was by far the worst. Vonage is currently my only phone service. I had a guest in the house. She was trying to make some important calls. There was no phone service. She could not get in touch with any one to find out what to do. My wife came home to this situation and called me at the office. I called tech support. They claimed that my server (Bopper 1) had gone down and would be back up momentarily and that I was only out of service for a few minutes. I told tech support that it was at least an hour. I asked if they had alternate routing for just such a problem. He said that they do not. If your server goes down you are out. The tech said he changed some settings for my router.
We will see.
I now am looking into dumping Vonage or getting just basic service for when outages are happening.

Sounds frustrating. If this is a short term problem I could probably handle it by just using my wireless phone temporarily, but I don't get very good reception on it down in the little "hollow" we live in. I'll never buy another house at the bottom of two hills again. Cell phones aren't worth diddly in a "hollow". Good luck with the outages and your server.

"how long is a piece of string"
Okay, how long is the average piece of string?
I'm not looking for God, just reliability. I was a Hurrucane Hugo "survivor" in Charleston, SC in 1989 and I cooked on a bbq grill for 2 weeks, took cold showers and made phone calls on cell phones only, but that didn't last and it definitely was not the normal standard for all of the above. I guess I just want some reassurance before I have my wife yelling at me, "now what the hell did you go and do!!"
Jeez, you should have heard her when I switched to DVR from a cable box and a VCR!

Learning curve(s) can be a problem, and some people resist change. The 11 digit discussion will continue.

Some people accept difference and some do not.
