I want my main base of my phone in the kitchen, not next to my computer in my home office. I'm hooking up my Vonage router and have a question. Can I connect the adaptor on the router Vonage gave me to the phone jack in the wall? I read something about checking to see if I have a live PSTN voltage. The Vonage web site says some customers have been successful doing this but I should check with a voltage meter or something. Has anyone else dealt with this? Can anyone tell me what this PSTN thing is all about?

yes, you can use your existing wiring under 2 conditions. First, the outside telephone line from the local telephone company needs to be disconnected. That is the PSTN talked about in the FAQs. Second, the jacks that you want to use must be on the same line.

We are using the previous jacks in our house and have the phones working. We can place calls with no problems, but the phones don't ring.

Only one phone rings, and then so faintly it's hard to hear.

The others not at all.

Any suggestions?

also, what have any of you done when you find that your house has previously been wired with 2 lines. One of our lines workis in the computer room and the dining room. The others are separate. We're using some kind of splitter, but I think maybe that's part of the problem with the phones not ringing.

Maybe we need more power??

Lois, Vonage Tech Support can "up" the voltage on the router for the telephones. Might have to explain all that over again, but it's a setting they can control.

Lois,

To convert a home from a 2 line system to a 1 line system is to go to the phone jack that currently work and duplicate exactly the same wire color to each colored screw for the jacks that do not work. This should allow you to use all the jacks on the same line.

Please tell us the colors of the wires to each colored screw if you have any questions. We would be glad to help. It is not too difficult to exchange the pairs.

Each line requires 1 pair of wires (2 wires). So normally you would only need to swap the two pairs of lines (4 wires) on the jacks that do not work with your Vonage line.
