I've been reading lots of posts here on how people have been having trouble with Caller ID and attributing it somehow to the REN numbers of the attached phones. While I believe this may be part of the problem, I did a little experiment that shows that at least in part something else may be going on as well.
CID has never been a problem for me. I have a Uniden 900MHz cordless phone, with two handsets, and it always shows the inbound caller like a charm. However, I sometimes use the modem on my computer. (It's to get at an annoying corporate intranet where they haven't yet set up a VPN. Yes, you can use a modem over Vonage - you just have to set it to go at 9600 baud.) I decided to do a test. I plugged in a double jack into the back of the RTP300, and plugged both the Uniden and my computer modem. Sure enough, the Uniden kept ringing, but Caller ID stopped showing up. The interesting thing here is that the computer was turned off at the time. I don't know the REN of a turned off modem, but it can't be so much. When I unplugged the computer modem (and left the double jack and the wires), CID came right back.
So there's something more than just a high REN going on.
I looked here (scroll down the page) to see about the signals that CID uses. My guess is that something in the modem was distorting the 1200/2200 Hz signals that the CID is using. Someone with a scope might want to take a look at it, since it seems pretty easy to reproduce the CID failure! I'd do it myself if I had one.
Thus it seems that it's not entirely a firmware problem. I'd be interested to know what kind of hardware they have in the RTP, and how the firmware controls the generation of the CID signals. |

I agree. There is something more than just REN involved. My own experiments, in which eliminating a phone with a low REN fixed the problem and eliminating one with a higher REN did not, suggest that. Also, changes in ring cadence have been reported as being involved. |

Yep, a scope is key here. I might borrow one from someone to look at this. |

I'll be interested in your results. My CID is out again. |

The guy I thought I could borrow one from doesn't have one. I'm still looking, however. |
