HELP!!!!
Issue: Takes 10-25 seconds for a dial tone to appear after you've picked up the handset. Incoming calls ring both the Vonage line and the 'network unavailable' forward number but I can't pick up from the Vonage line. Even if I get the dial tone, most of the time when I dial I get that annoying number unavailable tone (its only a tone and it doesn't matter what/who/where/when I call). The really random point is that it works for 10 minutes and then not at all.

This is a brand new problem since I installed the brand new WRTP54G. All I can say is that this is obviously a piece of junk. I have called Vonage 7 times to "discuss" the problem and have spoken to three level 2 associates. The responses have been:

Level 2 tech #1 - Let me change some settings for you, that should do it, let the box settle...

Level 2 tech #2 - You need to upgrade the Firmware, go to Linksys and upgrade it (Wrong! Contacted Linksys and they said Vonage is responsible for the firmware)

Level 2 tech #3 - Can't trouble shoot my problem because I don't have a different corded phone to attach to the adapter ( I guess I need to go buy a phone even though I'd been using my cordless phone with my old Vonage adapter for over a year with no issue).. Then goes on to say let me change some settings for you on this end and let the box settle.

Level 2 tech #3 (again) - You already have the most updated firmware (It still says 1.00.20 in the upper right hand corner of the Router Web Setup Utility) Tech said that there are different firmwares for different parts of the device Voice vs. Router, etc. I don't know if this is true but its driving me nuts!!!!!

Anyway I can't get the same story from anyone. I changed adapters because I had been having trouble with my very old wireless router so I figured if I was going to change routers I might as well get the WRTP54G and do away with a few extra cables. Was I wrong? Someone please tell me they have an answer to this. I guess tomorrow I will go back to the old setup because Vonage can't seem (or doesn't care) to get this to work!

90% of the problems will be fixed when your firmware upgrades to 1.00.55. I'm guessing out of the box it has firmware 1.00.20. Mine had 1.00.18 when I bought mine. The delay of dial tone, provisioning status, and other issues will disappear with the firmware upgrade which will happen automatically in a day or two.

Thanks for the response Actor90. But somehow it doesn't seem acceptable to me that I have to live without any service for a few days just to get a firmware upgrade that no one from tech/customer support says I need. I guess I'll give it another day but once again my phone service is terrible.
I feel extrememly foolish for thinking that I could actually buy this and have it up and running in a matter of minutes. How do New customers put up with this?
I actually asked to see if I could have both of my Vonage adapters for my one phone line but this was shot down pretty quickly. Would be nice to know that I could swap out adapters at a time like this instead of having to go through the whole process of model numbers and mac addresses after waiting on the phone for a half hour.
Anyway, I'll post an update if I ever get the firmware upgrade and if the WRTP54G is a piece of junk or not. Given most of the posting I've read I'm not too thrilled with what my conclusions may be...

Jocjo-

You've indicated that you're using a cordless phone. What frequency is it? It may be interfering with the wireless router.

Its a 5.8Ghz phone. And i actually have no issues accessing the internet wirelessly.
However, I have noticed that the range from the WRTP54G is poor. My 3 year old Netgear had better range (and that is not saying much). VPN appears to work so far but I still don't have a good idea as to what affect my activity online has with my phone service.
My original setup was Comcast Cable Modem --> Netgear Wirless G Router --> Motorola Vonage Adapter... This setup worked fine until I started having issues with the Wireless connectivity to the router. So I decided to make a change at the wireless router (needed better range, living in an urban area means that it has to compete with multiple signals) and decided why not get rid of some cables and boxes (would make the little lady happy, of course) and get the Vonage/Linksys WRTP54G. Figured I would get better service (wrong so far), better range (wrong so far) and fewer cables (one out of three ain't bad I guess...).

What about the firmware issue? What version are you running? What does customer service say about all this?

When I logon to the Router I still see 1.00.20 Firmware. Is there really a different version for the router and for the voice component? CS say that say I am already upgraded.

That's really odd. I wish one of the experts on these wireless routers would jump in. I did notice one time on my RTP300 that the firmware version reported on the opening page in the upper right corner was not the same as the version reported on the status page. That was corrected when I received a later upgrade. Is anything like that going on with your unit?
