Just received this email from "Vonage". Not sure if it's real or not. The thing that makes me suspicious is the notable lack of details as to WHY I should click on the provided link. That and the screwy URL.

The reason why it seems more real to me than other phishing attempts is because of the fact that I did recently sign up... and I used a brand new email address that I created specifically for Vonage.

Full text below minus the complete URL:

If you reproduced the main part of the URL, then its definitely phishing, as the domain is emsg.net, not Vonage.com.

I figured as much.

But I am astounded that this email address could be gathering phishing attempts already. I created it no more than 2 weeks ago and have ONLY used it when signing up with Vonage.

emsg.net is registered to Exmplar.com, which appears to be a marketing firm. Visiting their root site at http://www.emsg.net/ gives a pretty clear explanation of who they are and what they do.

I *assume* it's legit. I imagine it'll be doing a marketing survey or making a sales pitch for something. Vonage probably has a symbiotic money-making arrangement with them, where they can send you ads and Vonage makes a little dough. Or they simply could have hired Exmplar to handle their initial customer contact so they don't have to maintain the servers, etc, to do it.

I *would* visit it (preferably using Mozilla, Firefox, or Opera - not Internet Explorer). I *would not* enter any Vonage passwords or phone numbers into anything you see there. If you want me to check it out, private message me the entire URL and I'll have a peek from beind a few firewalls, in a secure environment. (DISCLAIMER: Of course, if it IS legit, you may expose some account information to me. I promise not to do anything with it, but you don't know me from Adam, so I won't take it personally if you decline the offer). Smile

Wow... it appears to be real. I went ahead and clicked and surprisingly it appears to be a real Vonage website. Here's what it looks like:

Maybe I'm too jumpy, but that initial email really did look like a phishing attempt. They need to re-think their email delivery. Very Happy

Looks pretty legit. I'd stick with typing in www.vonage.com to access your account, though. Just to be safe.

What does that award mean?

If it means that this is a silly thread, perhaps so... but you gotta admit that in today's world, that original Vonage email looks very much like a phishing attempt.

You'd think they'd know better.
