I had a good experience with Vonage. I even advised my friends to use it. Since the beginning of the month of july, I have been experiencing some difficulties when I MAKE calls to the following US and Canada area codes : 305, 561, 239, 203, 302, 215, 407, 646, 504, 267, 809. The other person does not hear well. Since some area codes work well, I don't think the problem is my internet connection. And what I don't understand, when I RECEIVE calls from the above
mentioned area codes, it works well.

Problems with outgoing calls but Incoming calls work well - Amazing huh !!
I have a lot of friends who are experiencing the same problem. We all have direcway...

Ged,

This is what I have been trying to track down in a couple threads but so far have come up empty. I don't understand why inbound differs from outbound calls; I have a similar issue. Outbound can often be bad but inbound, 100% perfect. Could it be the codec used for inbound differs from outbound?

You did state that you didn't think it was your internet connection. However, I have found there to be some very knowlegable and helpful people on this board. It will help them if you could post your test results from testyourvoip.com (use the test to Boston option) and also your u/l and d/l speeds.

It might be a defect in the gateway between Vonage's Voip network and the POTS telephone network. Calls coming in would probably use different access points from those going out, or so I'd guess.

I assume you've called Vonage? Sounds very much like a problem with their Points of Presence. No way to tell for sure, but that's what it smells like.

Which plan do you have w/ direcway?

03) Q: What connection speeds will I typically get with DIRECWAY?

A: With the DIRECWAY Home service plan, you may enjoy download speeds up to 700Kbps, with typical speeds of about 500Kbps to 600Kbps during peak times. Upload speeds, which are capable of reaching 128Kbps, are typically 70Kbps to 80Kbps during peak hours.

With the DIRECWAY Professional plan, connect your home office to the Internet with maximum download speeds of up to 1.0Mbps, with typical speeds about 650Kbps to 750Kbps during peak times. Upload speeds, which are capable of reaching 200Kbps, are typically 100Kbps to 125Kbps during peak hours.

Yipes! I missed that entirely. Good catch.

I didn't even think Vonage could HANDLE Directway or a Sat link. Well, OK, it could, but I would think the call would be frustrating.

There's a .5 second delay EACH WAY to and from the sat.

Have you tried setting the bandwidth saver to lowest (30kps) from your Vonage dahsboard/account website to see if that makes any difference?

This conversation is going on now in the Directway forum on broadbandreports.com. There is a thread on packet8 that talks about Voip dying out in the last few months.

Hi,

I have a lot of problems with my Vonage over dw6000 (incoming and outgoing calls). The VOIP's customer service told me that my upload is not good enough. I intend to upgrade my dw6000 to dw7000 on G4R. Is there someone using Vonage over dw7000 ?

For what it's worth, you can see my specs in my signature below. My problems started last week. Whenever I made an outbound call to numbers in NC, Montana, and NV and even my local cell phone, I would sound like I was studdering -- all choppy and broken. However, if someone called me, I sounded just fine. I called Vonage and have been working with a rep all this week and we've ran all kinds of tests. I even spent an hour on the phone with Comcast to make sure I had good levels. I'm good all the way around. I ran a test on www.testyourvoip.com and I got back a 4.2 almost every time while on the phone talking to someone!!!! I don't think it's anything with my upload and download speeds, but rather I think it's something wrong with Vonage's routers or POP's where it takes the IP and converts it to POTS audio. If it was something with my box (RTP300), then why do I have perfect audio for all of my inbound calls??? FWIW, the past couple of days, things have been better (just a pop now and then which is expected for VOIP), so I don't know if they've finally found the bad part or what.

Anybody else been experiencing what I'm referring to above???
