PostPosted: Fri Nov 04, 2005 6:55 am    Post subject: 800# portability to Vonage Reply with quote Back to top

I've posted this several times in other Forums, but never here. Perhaps it will receive better attention now..

Vonage is missing significant revenue by their inability to port existing 800 numbers. I'm not yet a business, yet was among the first in Arkansas with an 800 residential number in 1987. I've held the present number I have for well over a decade, it's UNRESTRICTED, works throughout the lower 48 states, and I'm interested in porting it to Vonage. The FCC has allowed 800 number portability since (or close to) 1995, and my number SHOULD be eligible due to it's grandfathered status and CONUS coverage.

I'm not alone in this wish, especially those with businesses and existing 800 lines. I'm seriously considering starting my own business and moving my present line to a business status. That has not yet happened, but it would be better for me

Vonage has never given me a solid answer on this, and I blame their lack of foresight in addressing this. It took one of their competitors to tell me "Since Vonage and us are not defined as 'Phone Companies' under the law, we have no means to port an 800 WATS from a phone company to us!" Rolling Eyes

Essentially, it may require a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking being filed with the Federal Communications Commission for American customers of Vonage. How it may affect 800 WATS in Canada, I have yet to learn, but am quite cognizant of how Canadians may want the same ability in the future as well.

In closing, if there is enough interest in starting a working group to organize an effort in having an NPRM filed with the Commission to enable present 800 number holders as myself to be able to port to Voip as Vonage, AND if Vonage or other Voip providers are accepting of the goals of said working group, then let's make it happen!

You have a very valid point. It would behoove all Voip providers including Vonage to be able to port toll free numbers. If I understand your post correctly you have done some good research and found the source of the problem and it sounds like the FCC is the holdup. Yet, they have already publicly stated they don't want to be a deterent to Voip. So I don't see why Vonage wouldn't support your effort as well.

Here is what the FCC says on their Voip website:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has worked to create an environment promoting competition and innovation to benefit consumers. Historically, the FCC has not regulated the Internet or the services provided over it. On February 12, 2004, the FCC found that an entirely Internet-based Voip service was an unregulated information service. On the same day, the FCC began a broader proceeding to examine what its' role should be in this new environment of increased consumer choice and what it can best do to meet its role of safeguarding the public interest.

Have the Voip providers got themselves a PAC yet? If not, they should. That would be the group to get this moving because it would benefit everyone.

I know this won't make you happy, but until you get the issue resolved I seem to remember a lot of 800 number forwarding services. Even AT&T has one. I have no idea of the cost and I bet you already went down that route. When I worked in North Carolina we had an 800 number forwarding service ran by AT&T that simply forwarded anyone calling the 800 number to our CO line. But, it did cost us.

Good luck.
