I recently bought Vonage PAP2 device and activated my conxn at Vonage. I used Cable modem ( Motorola SB5100 ) directly connected to the PAP2 device and it worked just fine. Sent the PAP2 device to my cousin to use it at his place ..
He has a DSL modem and when he connects it to the device, there is no dial tone. He doesnt need to enter in the login/password with the dsl modem to access internet.
Called up the Vonage customer care, and they are insisting that it would work fine with a router added in between. Am wondering if that is true.. before spending the buck on the router, testing it and sending it accross...
Please help..

What DSL? Your cousin's DSL provider might block Voip access.
Dumb questions:
1. How long did your cousin wait? It might take a while to acquire the connection, then activate the line. I've had this take up to 2-3 minutes depending on firmware, etc.
2. Has your cousin run the Voip tests (www.testyourvoip.com)?
3. I don't know whether TestyourVoIP tools will help with port blockage, but I'm sure there are tests that will. I'd hook a computer up and run a port scan, and make sure the Vonage ports are accessible (see some of the other threads for the ports that need to be open).
4. Your cousin did turn off his DSL modem when making the switch, right? I know my cable modem would be VERY confused if I unplugged one MAC and plugged in another. The modem has to be reset (30 second powerdown, usually) to recognize a new device. I assume his provider does not check MAC addresses off the modem like some Cable providers do?
Just the first three things to try, anyway. |
