PostPosted: Wed Nov 02, 2005 10:11 am    Post subject: WRTP54G Issues Reply with quote Back to top

OK, I've been whining about my 54G, and unfortunately 1.00.55, while somewhat helpful, has not solved the problems. I figured I'd do this as a separate thread so I wouldn't skunk up the threads on the 300, which seems far more common than my device.

I want to hear from other WRTP54G owners, assuming there are a few of you out there, and see if my problems are unique.

If they are, I'll shut up and go buy another router to put in front of this Linksys to do my "real" work, set up the appropriate passthroughs for the Linksys to talk to Vonage, relegate the Linksys to Vonage duty only, and call it a love story.

Up until recently, I have been THRILLED with the Vonage service AND my router. Now I'm THRILLED with the Vonage service, but the router - not as much.

I have the following configuration:

Cable (SusCom Maine) -> Linksys BEFCMU10 Modem -> Vonage WRTP54G Router/Adapter -> my home network (2 PC's and a ReplayTV).

I have plenty of bandwidth for the Vonage line (3MB/256K tested at ~2.5MB, ~190K pretty consistently) as long as I don't do a lot of BitTorrent or other traffic. I have no complaints about my Vonage line per se. It's been good and pretty solid, as long as I don't steal its bandwidth. Voice quality is excellent - as good as a POTS line.

I have a few caller ID issues, but since I use it for work (telecommuting) and the only people who call me are from work, and my company blocks outgoing caller ID, I really don't care about caller ID all that much. Wink

Issues I have had:

Before 1.00.52:
- DNS connections are flaky. This is resolved pretty easily, though, by retrieving and hard coding my ISP's DNS information into the router, or doing the same to each client. Bit of a pain, but I can live with it.

- router needed to be reset intermittently every few days or every week or so, for no reason I could ever figure out. Didn't seem to matter how much I did with it, just lost connection every few days. I can live with that.

1.00.52:

- Router slows WAAAY down, and eventually stops responding, when using a "heavy traffic" app like BitTorrent (I tried to download OpenOffice from BitTorrent, and had to restart my router something like 6 times that day just to keep it running).

- Even without BitTorrent running, router needed at least daily resets.

1.00.55:

- A little better. The connection has been stable for almost 4 hours now with no resets. This far exceeds my expectations from 1.00.52.

- Still unable to use BitTorrent. When I start it up, the router goes for about an hour or so, then overloads and has to be restarted.

So, a call to other users of this router. Have you been happy with it? Can you use it reliably? Can it handle decent volumes of traffic? Is there any advice you can offer on proper care and feeding of this beast?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any clues on this, or at least let me know if I'm the only one having problems with this unit.

FYI

Your adapter will work perfectly obtaining an IP from another source and not used as a router. The RT31P2 has the same issues and since both these adapters have been out there has never been a fix for our problems surfing etc. Vonage I gotta say after all this time obviously could care aless or will they admit these are seriously flawed and really are JUNK!! I had your adapter with same issues as yours etc and was replaced with a RT31P2 and same ol same ol. The RTP300 works nearly perfect and I don't know if there is a wireless one but really demand that piece of JUNK gets replaced. I cannot believe that these issues still exist and nothing has changed in months.

To be honest, I don't want to replace this with another Vonage router. If the problem turns out to be the router, which it probably is, I'll go out to the store and buy a router that *I* control the firmware on.

I've already lost more (billable) hours with connection drops than a router would cost. From your post, I'd say that the problem is looking more like the router, and less like a problem between me and my ISP. Wink

I've also contacted my ISP. My modem is, after all, an older DOCSIS 1.1 unit. I'm asking them if they support DOCSIS 2.0 and if they feel a modem upgrade would help my connection quality and reliability. However, I rarely have to restart my cable modem, it's most often just a router restart.

Having a router that smoothly supports BitTorrent isn't an easy thing. BitTorrent floods the router with lots of connections, and this can overwhelm routers. I expected far more from Linksys, though.

The best one I ever had was my old NetGear that I traded in on the "G for Free" offer. Maybe I could get Vonage to send me one of the better NetGear or other units that someone else traded in. (grin) I'll probably just stick with a wired-only router for my "front end", though, and use the "G" on the Linksys for the few times a year I want wireless.

Is there anyone out there that is NOT having problems with your WRTP54G? If so, did you have to do anything special to make it work?

I have had a different problem with this router since I started using this service a few months ago. When I receive or make a phone call the wireless connection goes down but comes right back after the call ends. A direct ethernet connection to the router never goes down but I typically only use the wireless. The .55 release did not fix this problem.

I've had my WRTP54G since June. I can honestly say that during that entire time, through several firmware upgrades, I have never had any issues with the wireless router capabilities. It has been solid as a rock. Just to let you know, I have the following devices connected to the router:

2 wireless notebooks
1 wireless desktop
1 wireless printer
1 X-Box connected directly to the router using a Powerline adapter

The router sits in my basement and the wireless signal reaches both the first and second floors of my house. Even on the second floor, signal strength usually exceeds 90%,

The only complaint I've ever had, and this was a serious one, was "reverse echo". People talking to me would hear their own speech echoed back to them. But this problem was fixed a few versions ago and everything has been great since.

Caller-ID is problematic...but I don't give a rat's behind about CID Smile

Now if Vonage would just send me my rebate Sad I traded in my old BEFW11S4 in the "G for free" program.

Thanks for the feedback.

Do you use the router for any high-bandwidth apps, like P2P (BitTorrent, anything like that)?

Probably the most intensive app would be the X-Box online gaming.

Other than standard email and web browsing, I use Lotus Notes for corporate email and remote control corporate servers from home when necessary (guess my job). Smile

No P2P, but I haven't noticed any problem with video streaming from the web or file sharing within my home network.

I'm getting good internet performance (incl bittorrent) with no disconnects and the phone works fine too. Guess I'm lucky in that respect. But shared directories on each of my two PC's take a long time to open across the network - lots longer than with my old router (the wired one that came with my Vonage subscription).

What version of the firmware are you running? 1.00.55?

I finally bypassed my router last night, just to test BitTorrent overnight. Rock solid performance, no problems of any kind.

I'm not sure if this is worth a call to Vonage support about. I'd love to have them just send me back my old router, or another one, and replace this router/adapter with a simple Vonage adapter.
