You have a problem with your ISP. Your upload speed is too low and your packet discards on the call from Boston to you are high. You might improve things by reducing your phone bandwidth, but the real answer is to work the ISP issue.

Before calling them, I would suggest first re-booting your modem, router/adapter and running the tests again. Then eliminate everything you can from the setup. Run your computer straight to your modem and run the tests again. Then call your ISP if you're still seeing low speeds and poor Voip performance. If any of these actions gets your speeds and Voip quality up, get back to us and we'll go from there.

The phone bandwidth is all the way down. I rebooted everything, no difference. I did connect the PC directly to the the cable modem and IIRC it didn't make any difference. I'll have to redo it and report the results. I did run ping plotter both ways ( with everything connected normal and with the PC direct to the modem ). Just about every hop had packet loss.
The RT31P2 has all the default settings..

I had this problem at first and here is what I had to do. Measure your bandwidth with you on and off the Vonage phone their should be a considerable difference in your upload speed.

My problem was 2 fold. 1 bandwith saver was enabled and that was causing a problem so Vonage techs completly turned it off.

Also per a Vonage tech he said that in order to get excellent quality all the time you should have a cable modem that is certified DOCSIS 2.0. The one you have is 1.0 and 1.1

I have a broadband gateway that is DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 and I have occasional problems.

Also if you have a cordless phone and you are going through a wireless router that can cause problems to depending on how close the cordelss phone is to your house router.

Your Cable Modem and Router (if you are using a router in addition to the one supplied by Vonage) should both be certifed DOCSIS 2.0. Modems that just say DOCSIS 2.0 compatabile don't fully work all that well and still cause problems.

OK, you're getting poor results with and without the Vonage adapter on line. Your upload speed is low and your packet loss is huge, so you have an issue with your ISP. You'll have to give them a call and get them to fix it. Sorry there are no magic fixes, but Voip is absolutely dependent on solid broadband internet service.

There is something intermittent going on.

Just did a Vonage speed test :
My Results
Download 4,851,808 bps
Upload 359,496 bps
QOS 98%
RTT 58 ms
MaxPause 46 ms

Plus did a test at testyourvoip. 3.1 from me to Boston...

Plus ping plotter shows the hops are really clean..

That's good information, but I don't really think it changes anything. You have a simple setup and you've eliminated the Vonage box as the source of the bad behavior. If the bad behavior is intermittent, it's still an ISP problem.

Packet loss is the number one killer of Voip. TCP/IP is the main transport mechanism for Voip using something called UDP Datagrams. These UDP Packets, for speed purposes, transmit fast but there is no way to retransmit a packet if they are lost or drop. In other words, if you are seeing packet loss between you and your ISP, then that is not a good situation. The garbled speech is due to packets being dropped thus words drop. Also, congestion in the network can cause this problem also. This problem is 100% un-equivicably with the ISP.
