First, here is my configuration

Mototorola Cable Modem > Dlink DGL-4300 > PAP2 > Panasonic 5.8Ghz phones

I'm curious if anyone has seen this before. Actually, it seems to have started after I replaced a Linksys WRT54G with the Dlink DGL-4300. Only on outbound calls, the other caller sometimes doesn't hear me at all - dead silence (according to them). Also, sometimes on outbound calls, the "ring" bleeds into the call for a couple of seconds after the other party answers.

About the one-way thing, I noticed something else related to this. My wife called me yesterday and left me a VM on my cell phone. My phone rang again (immediatly after the first call) and dropped to VM. Both calls were from her calling from the Vonage line. When I listened to my cell VMs, there was one from her, then one 5 minute long VM of silence. She says she only called the first time (and I could hear her message fine).

Today, she called me again. Call sounded fine. When I hung up, my cell phone immediatly rang again and caller id said it was from my Vonage line. I picked it up, dead silence. My wife said she only called me the one time when we actually spoke.

One more time today, same thing, but this time when I picked it up the first time, it was dead silent. Seconds later while I was still saying "Hello" and my cell said the call was still connected, my call waiting appeared and it was from her! I picked it up and she sounded fine. Its almost like the Vonage line is calling twice!

Very odd. Any advice appreciated! I am at work now but can post my speed results when I get home.

Out of curiosity why did you leave the WRT54G? Mine has been very stable. I want to try the Sveasoft everyone talks about, but I get frightened of tinkering with something so solid. I am assuming that you wanted the gaming option of this router. And Dlink does say:
Quote:
GameFuel™-Priority technology specifically designed to provide a seamless user experience for bandwidth-intense applications like online gaming, multimedia streaming, and Voice over IP (VoIP) applications.

One quick fix till you get it figured out might be using the WRT54G in front of the PAP2 and the Dlink DGL4300. Although that may be lame and lose any advantage you got with the DGL4300.

I think the DGL4300 is at firmware version 1.4. Which version do you have? But if you upgrade take heed:
Quote:
NOTE: Upgrading firmware will reset your settings back to default. Backup your configuration before upgrading firmware (Tools>Admin) and then restore configuration after upgrading the firmware.

Hopefully one of the readers more familiar with Dlink will offer a suggestion. But, I am suspecting a port problem or QOS problem. I was disappointed to see Voip wasn't in their Special Applications section for that router. But what do you have checked there?

I see your some of your frustration if you probe the Dlink website. The only thing I found in their Knowledge Base about Voip was the definition.

As a first step, I'd try going back to the original configuration and seeing if that fixes the problem. If the WRT54G is no longer available, I'd try plugging the PAP-2 directly into the modem and seeing if that fixes it. If it does, something probably needs tweaking in the Dlink, and one of the experts here can probably help.

FWIW, I have >20 WRT54GS routers in the field, each running Sveasoft (some Alchemy, some Talisman) and they've been rock solid. I've used Vonage with 5 of them so far & didn't have to touch the WRT54GS routers at all, literally was plug & play.

You are so tempting me. I may just go ahead and put it on. But I'm going to wait until I get back from my next business trip. If I mess it up my wife and kids would kill me.

I know the Sveasoft will allow greater wireless power, but did you see throughput increase as well?

the best (and only for me) advantage to sveasoft is ip addressing by mac. that's a great feature. I wish stock had it.

Hey thanks everyone for your replies! I ditched the Linksys because of some excess Jitter. I was hoping the Unicom technology behind the Gamefuel technology could help me. Sure enough, it brought me under the 50ms range.

Here are my results from testyourvoip.com. I chose San Jose since Boston was listed as the worst (at the moment) for the Internet Weather.

Doesn't look too bad. How are your upload and download speeds? Have you tried any of the other suggestions- original configuration, PAP-2 alone, WRT in front of Dlink?

Upload speeds seem to be consistent at ~400kbps and download varies from anywhere between 1.5 and 4 depending on the time of day.

I just tried the WRT54G again... I still hear the "ghost" ring when I call my cell phone. The last ring bleeds into the call after the party picks up the line. I can only assume that I might get the one way issue but will have to test some more.

I'm rather fond of the telnet console that Sveasoft adds as well, allows me to do a bunch of diagnostics independent of the computer.

Galion: There's nothing to it... just make sure you don't attempt to flash via wireless, that's when problems can crop up.
