PostPosted: Sun Feb 22, 2004 1:48 pm    Post subject: Multiple Phone adapters, 4 - 8 simultaneous calls? Reply with quote Back to top

I've got a pretty strong broadband connection (1200 to 1600 down usually). This is for my business, and I would love to have all of my phone lines switched to Vonage lines. Is this even realistic? I would definitely need at least 2 phone adapters (though probably 3 or 4), and would have 4 to 8 simultaneous calls.

How would you install multiple 186's? Are there any pitfalls to look out for? Do I need a special router? I've got a generic firewall/router now.

I really have no experience with Voip directly. Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
cslewis

These phone calls will all be incoming. The callers will call up, punch in some commands on their keypad, then leave a 2 - 10 minute recording. There are a few voice prompts that will be played on my end when they first call in, and at the end of their messages.

So, will it work for 4 to 8 such calls simultaneously?

The key speed measure will be your upstream speed. Your download speed seems ample but what is your upstream speed?

Also -- you will need to customize the port on each one of our ATAs by contacting Vonage technical support. Unless, that is, you can provide each of your ATAs with their own custom, public addressible IP. Then you don't need any customization.

Normally the Vonage adapter (speaking of the older Cisco ATA-186), is configured for port 5061. As long as Vonage configures your routers to register themselves on different ports, it's quite possible to have as many ATAs as your Internet connection will support.

A high-quality call will require 90Kbps in both directions. If you have eight calls, thats 720Kbps down and 720Kbps up. Realistically, it may require as much as 1Mbps in both directions since protocol overhead may eat some additional bandwidth.

You could adjust the quality of your lines to as little as 30Kbps per line. However, you would have to determine whether or not this quality is suitable for your business.

Have been doing some reading... is it true that the ATA-186 will only allow one line at a time to be compressed? Also, if I ordered today, is the 186 what I should expect to get? Does the Vt-1000 work better in this area?

you said something about publicly addressable ip addresses... is this something I would need? The service works with dynamic addresses doesn't it?

sorry for the noob questions
cslewis

ps, how long does it take Vonage to get me my stuff once I order? Is it something I could pickup locally?

I have read something about the ATA-186 only having enough processing power to handle two calls where one call had to be at one setting and the other call had to be at a different setting. I don't know the specifics.

I don't think Vonage is sending the ATA-186 these days. I believe they are using a new device, the Motorola VT-1000. I don't know the specifics of this device and whether or not there are any caveats with two simultaneous calls.

Regarding dynamic IPs vs. static IPs vs. public vs. private, I have read that when you use more than one ATA device, Vonage will have to configure the devices to each use a unique port. I don't have any personal experience to know whether or not this is true. Technically, if both devices are behind a NAT + PAT router, there shouldn't be any need to configure the devices in any special manner. The router will translate both devices "from" port requests to a new port "on the other side" of the router. As I said, I have no experience with this and I have read that each adapter needs to be configured to use a unique port.

It's probably best to call Vonage technical support and ask some questions regarding the devices that they are using and how multiple devices work behind a DHCP broadband connection. Since you desire so many lines, they may offer a commercial version of their consumer adapter which handles multiple lines much better than multiple single adapters. Of course, this is a total assumption. They may not offer such a device and may instead choose to send you multiple devices that are setup to work together.
