I received my VT1000v a few days ago. I am running a few machines on my network for web, ftp, development, etc. I go through Earthlink and also run TZO for dynamic host name resolution.
All of the machines are assigned static IPs through a Linksys BEFSR81 (pretty much the same as the 41, except it's 8 port). My BEFSR81 fried out after a long night of trying to get all the gear to work correctly. In the mean time, I've been thinking about installing a switch instead of a router and letting the Motorola MTA handle all the NAT duties.
If I put the box in front of my router, I couldn't get passthrough to work for me...my router kept seeing the Motorola's IP or nothing at all - no connectivity etc. If I put the box behind my router, I got zero anything. No connections, etc. Assigning the unit a static IP was a nightmare - it just kinda disappeared..
Is anyone successfully using the passthrough with a Linksys product, and NOT using DHCP for their network (i.e. your machines are all static)?
If anyone is running their MTA as a true NAT, does it have any firewall protection? Cause if a switch will solve my problems, I'm cool with that...
Hey Vonage, how about a techie's FAQ? How about a little love for the geeks? Get decisive and do some hardware testing and tell us how to do this stuff! Or we will become disgruntled and start sending you cartons of old grade school milk with the blue fuzz. |

I heard that the DHCP address pool in the MTA has only one address. In other words, you need your own router if you want to hook up more that one computer to the MTA. |

Personally, I don't believe the MTA box is robust enough to handle being a router, DHCP server, and quasi firewall all in one. Maybe Motorola will rectify its rather low tolerance for port scans; until then, if you have a router, put it up front. Hit up vonage's website for a list of approved routers that work ok with their setup. |
I have a Linksys wireless and use port triggering...haven't had a problem since I installed Vonage (6 weeks ago) |
