Possible to get visual indicator of new voice mail messages?

In switching from a land line to Vonage, my wife and I miss having a visual indicator (blinking light or blinking number) on our message phone telling us that we had voice messages waiting to be heard, as well as the number of such messages.

Is there a way to have a phone "know" from Vonage that new voice messages have arrived and then blink or beep once in a while to indicated this?

Of course!

Most newer phones offer this ability. It is usually called Voice Mail Waiting Indicator in the features list for the phone.

Additionally, there's no reason you can't continue to use your current answering machine with Vonage unless you wanted the extra features that voice mail offers, like the e-mail notification/attachment, etc.

yup, Vonage has a stutter dial tone, (when there are msg's, when you pick up a phone to dial, you'll hear beeps rather than a dial tone).. and most newer phones will 'listen' to that and set off a light.. i don't think the phones will display how many msg's there are tho, but like said above, you can have the msg's e-mailed to you, or just an e-mail sayin gyou have a VM..

I have it set so i get a SMS txt msg on my cell when there is a VM on my Vonage line.. (some ppl have reported that this is a problem with their carrier, cuz they may receive mulitple msg's to make up the long e-mail, mine happens to cut it down to only 140 chars and thats all that gets sent, I'm lucky i guess, and Bell Mob. doesn't charge us for incomming SMS anyways)

If you get the rtp300 which Vonage sends out the line indicator light will also flash if there is a message.
