there's your delay right there -- satellite will always have delay measured in seconds just because of the distances the signal has to travel. from you, up to sat, down to ground again to be processed, out over the the net, back, up, and back down. signal takes 4 trips to and from sat (up to satellite twice, down to you twice), not counting what happens with normal latency once it hits the net.

If your provider is satellite-based as I suspect it is, there is nothing you can do. The speed of light is set by physics, and satellites are tens of thousands of miles away. If it takes a second to get the data to the satellite and a second for it to come back to Earth, that's 2 seconds of latency, and then it takes 2 more on top of that to hear your caller's reply to what you said, which is your 4 seconds. You'll have to put up with it, or find a land-based alternative.

yeah...

speed of light = 186000miles/sec
altitude of satellite = 22300miles
number of trips = 4 (from you to sat, sat to ground, ground to sat, sat to you)

4 * (22300miles * 1sec/186000miles) = 4 * (.12sec) = .48sec

so best case without going out to the internet or route the call or have any other "normal" latency would be ~500ms for one side only.

if you're using it between two people who have satellite (i only assume that's a possibility because "we have d-link routers running over direcway sat") then that'd be doubled (in essence, it's taking 8 trips to and from satellite -- you talk which goes up to sat(1), down to ground(2), out to internet and back, up to sat on way to receiver's end(3), down to them(4)... then they respond which goes up to sat (5), down to ground (6), out to internet and back, up to sat on way to you (7), and down to you (8 ). absolute best case in that scenario between when you say something, the other person hears it, responds, and you hear them would be 1 second. but it would necessarily have to be more than that for normal latency for anything that goes over the net once it hits ground and has to be processed...
