Vonage and Northwestel

Hi,

Northwestel is the phone company in the Yukon, Norhtern BC, Northwest Territories, Nunavut and parts of Northern Alberta.

Has anyone been able to get good quality service with vonage using Northwestel ADSL service.

According to the vonage speed test

I am getting downloads of 1.59 Mbps (ok), but uploads of only 23-49 kbps. The uploads are bad.

When I use the northwestel speed test
http://speedtest.nwtel.ca/
it gives me much higher speeds
downloads 2.0 Mbps, and uploads around 100kbps.

Anyone else using Northwestel?

try also www.testyour voip.com and do a test call to Boston.

with those upload speeds, you probably won't get a very good outgoing connection, but you may, and it may work great sometimes and not that great other times..

try the speed tests over a few days time and at different times of the day, and see what kinda of average results you can get..

Vonage does have a setting that uses only 30kbps, so it may work with your connection.. Vonage Canada has a 30 day money back trial, so get it and try it out..

I'm on Northwestel hi-speed & unfortunately live on a stretch that has very poor upload speeds(1mile either way from me has great speeds). I can hear incoming great but outgoing sounds like it's coming from the bottom of a swimming pool if heard at all.
Hopefully SSImicro gets their towers & wireless service up & running early in the new year & I can tell Northwestel were to put my phone bill. Lol
