Location: Chicago
ISP: Comcast cable
Download/upload speeds: 5 Mbps/ 700 Kbps
Modem: RCA DCM325
Vonage adaptor: Motorola VT1005V
Network: cable modem -> Vonage adaptor -> Belkin Pre-n wireless router
Issue: severely garbled incoming calls, choppy. Callers seem to be able to hear me fine.

I see the report below shows a lot of packet loss. What do I do about it? How do I determine if the cable modem is bad or if I have an ISP problem?

wow, that's quite possibly the worst I've ever seen.
get pingplotter.com and see where the problem is.

Thanks for the encouragement Sad

I've already used up my 30-day trial period for pingplotter. Is there another way to see what's up?

I didn't understand the output. It showed 100% packet loss at two points along the way from my cable modem to yahoo.com. All the other links - there were about 12 - looked fine. But 100% loss made no sense since I was able to ping yahoo.com and visit the website.

I'll try deinstalling and reinstalling ping plotter. It may drop an invisible trace in the registry or on my hard disk to prevent this; I'll see.

the 100% loss is typical on local network (isp) hops since they block icmp and other traffic (they aren't pingable so every packet is dropped)

OK, I got pingplotter freeware to work. What's confusing me is entries 1 and 13, which show 100% packet loss in the graphical display.

that's hard to look at, but it looks like you're dropping packets on several hops. can you access your cable modem (i.e. 192.168.100.1)?

Sure. The diagnostics page is hard to copy/paste since it's self-refreshing. But it reports the following:

Forward path:
signal acquired at 709.750 MHz
SNR: 33.0 dB
Rec'd signal strength: -4.8 dBmV
Micro-Reflections: 35 dBc
Modulation: 256 QAM

Return Path:
Connection: Acquired
Frequency: 24.0 MHz
Power Level: 28.8 dBmV
Channel ID: 3
Modulation: QPSK

well, the first thing I would try is a new cable modem, especially if it's free or make sure you can return it. I'm surprised you have QPSK modulation. how old is that modem and are you getting the advertised 5M/700 speeds in tests?
