Hi all. Now that I've had Voip on my personal line for a while, I'm considering porting my business number over. One thing that helped me along is the fact that now the number can still be listed in the original carrier's (Verizon's) white pages. I already know that my number can be transferred, but I wondered about the capability of porting a toll-free number. For years I've also had a Verizon 888 number for customers of mine who would otherwise pay a toll calling me. Does anyone know if I can keep this number also, or would I have to change my toll-free to a new one?

Thanks Smile

From the FCC website - it appears that toll-free numbers are portable, but I'm sure as with most things, ymmv... Even though LNP is supposed to be available for local numbers, some still aren't portable as you can read from posts in the Number Transfer forum.

http://www.fcc.gov/wcb/tapd/888/888faq.html

# I've heard that toll-free numbers are portable; what does that mean?

Answer: Portability means that toll-free subscribers can change carriers without having to obtain a new toll-free number. Subscribers may also change Responsible Organizations if they choose to do so (For a discussion of Responsible Organizations see question 3,above).

I remembered reading this one on the Vonage site:
Toll-Free User's Guide

In the overview:
Quote:
* You cannot port a toll-free number to Vonage.

That doesn't mean you can't ask customer service, but it does seem unlikely.

Floodgater is correct.. I've posted on this subject before almost a year ago and I advocate support or organizing an effort to have this changed. At the present time, you CANNOT port an existing toll-free number to Vonage. NOTE! Vonage has never been able to give me an solid answer on this subject, however, another Voip company told me the skinny on it.
"Since a Voip company such as Vonage is not considered a phone company, yet your existing 800 number IS with a phone company (MCI), we have no means to accept your number between such entities at the present time, even with the FCC 800 portability rules in effect since 1995."
Therefore, I must keep my 800 number with Verizon, formerly MCI, until I can port it here. Bites, doesn't it?
It is my personal suggestion that a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking be considered or filed with the Federal Communications Commission concerning this, as many businesses would rather not give up their current business WATS, some of these long established, to be allowed a means of moving them to a Voip. It would make Vonage more and more of a REVENUE STREAM and Vonage would do themselves a huge favor in supporting such an effort.
