This router won't deal with the massive traffic on a Shaw Cablesystems connection in Winnipeg. It frequently restarts, dropping my computer's LAN connection and dropping calls. I'm not even running any server behind the RT, just a browser and a clean Win2K machine (so don't get me started on possible virus scares.)

I had to put a real firewall in front of it to keep it going. Currently I have a Snapgear LITE (1.7.11) in front of it, and while it too has trouble keeping up with the traffic it doesn't fall down like the RT does. I used to have a SG300, which could put up with the traffic and also establish a 1-1 NAT with the RT31P2. That setup was perfect, though I can't justify a $300 expense to protect an oh-so-fragile Linksys product that's supposed to be a firewall.

The RT31P2's firmware is dated 21 FEB 2005, v1.28.00. There don't seem to be any firmware updates available from Linksys, and they're currently unreachable anyway.

I too had the RT31P2 on Shaw - in Victoria. I was using the Motorola SB5100 cable modem. I actually had about four of these on different Motorola SB5100's and none of them would work. It would just go down after 5 or ten minutes and I would have to reboot the cable modem and router.

After I put the RT31P2 behind another firewall, it worked fine. This was not an ideal setup for me, though. Upon checking, I found that many others had the same problem. I had to demand a replacement - I got the RPT300.

Since then, everything is perfect. I have it hooked up directly to the cable modem and it works great.

They sent out the RPT300 for free and gave me a 14 day grace period to return the old router. I suggest you ask them to do the same. They'll try to give you the runaround but it is worth it to persist.

I'd ask for a replacement except for one problem. I bought the router before signing up for Vonage.

I wonder if the extended warranty I paid Future Shop for the thing is good for an exchange.

Even though you bought the RT31P2 before signing up, it is specifically a Vonage router locked to Vonage service.

I know that people in this situation have had them exchanged so you should still try. They may be sticky about it but they will do it if you ask hard enough.

Basically, you purchased a device that will only work with Vonage, and they will NOT unlock it to work with another service provider, so it is essentially up to them to see that you have something that works.
