I have an email into tech support but im looking for any help i can get.

I just received my motorola box today and am having some trouble.
I currently have a home network set up and this is how i tried to set it up first of all.
Current ISP. Charter communications Pipeline Cable Internet
Current Router. D-Link DI-704 (updated firmware)
Telephone. Bellsouth (regular corded phone)

My setup-- Motorola SB4200 modem -to- D-link DSS-5 swich - to - D-link DI-704 router -to- my motorola Vonage box.

The reason i have the switch is i have a total of 2 PC's and 1 mac. I also have a Playstation 2 that is hooked up.
Currently from the router i have the 2 PC's and the mac connected. I have the ps2 hooked up to the switch.
I have 4 ports on the router and was planning on using the 4th port for Vonage.

I tried hooking Vonage up to the router but didn't have any luck. Im not sure if i was able to open the correct ports or not. So i then just hooked up Vonage to the switch which is inline prior to the router. In doing that i was able to get a dial tone and service. I would still like to set it up behind my router if possible. Any help you could provide would be great.

On to my second problem. Having it set up as described b4 i am able to make and rec. calls. However it seems as though it will only except calls from cell phones. My mother tried to call me via her regular land line phone several times and she got a message saying the phone no. is not inservice. she also got the voicemail once. She then tried on her cell phone and was able to get though. Any ideas on what that problem would be.

you'll need to port forward 4 ranges of UDP ports:
5060 – 5061 (UDP)
53 – 53 (UDP)
69 – 69 (UDP)
10000 – 20000 (UDP)

I just did this a couple of days ago and I was successfully able to setup my MTA behind my firewall/router.

Also, with the issue of the phone number reporting "no longer in service" - there is some latency between the time you get your phone number and the time it takes for the phone companies to update their records. When I got my phone # I had the same issue. It took a bit (1/2 day) for it to work correctly.

I don't know a lot about networking, but if you have the switch in front of the router, I think your cable modem would need to assign different IP addresses to the devices plugged into the switch. If your modem won't do that, I think you might put the switch after the router.

If you have good (fast) cable service, you can put the Motorola device (ATA) behind the router with no problems. If you do so, however, you may need to forward the ports mentioned by "lunchb0x", above.
