hello,

i was having the exact same problem with the Vonage service that you are describing.. after Vonage telling me it was my cable internet company and the cable company telling me nothing was wrong, i opted to get a new docsis 2.0 modem (both agreed that could be the issue) and no problems since!!!!! i had a modem that was 1.1.. so upgrade and i'm sure your problems will go away, mine did!!!

good luck

Quick followup:

I am happy to report that the quality and reliability of my Vonage service is excellent. The problem that started this thread is solved, and the voice quality and reliability of my service is fantastic -- better than its ever been.

I swapped out my phone, changing to a 5.8 GHz digital broadband phone by Vtech (Model IP 8100-2). With the switch to this phone, I no longer need the RT31P2 router, as networking is built into the phone. I highly recommend this phone. One feature I find especially useful with this phone is the message waiting indicator both on the base unit and wireless handsets. This helps you notice voicemail messages faster.

One other thing: The cablemodem I have been using throughout the life of this thread and that I am still using is a Toshiba PCX 1000, which is DOCSIS 1.0

Thanks everyone!

Believe it or not, i had the same problem, disconnecting call, static, can you hear me now?? I found this forum and did a few test, my best results were 3.2/5.0 at test my Voip and thats if i was not downloading anything from the net.

When i have my friends in town keep telling me they can't hear me and i have to call them back on my cell phone, i was mad. I wanted to call Vonage but dreaded the wait times so first i wanted to make sure my speeds from the isp was good.

I have a toshiba pcx1100 modem for a few years now, it performs well. To eliminate anything in the house i went outside and hook the modem to the cable line comming in the house because my modem and the rt31p2 would lose connection every now and then.

When i hook it up outside i used my laptop and did a few speed test, they were close to the advertise speed i was paying for(1.4m/512) but it varied a little especially the upload speed.

I then connected the rt31p2 and made a call overseas, call came in good and then 5 minutes later, i can't here you again, AARGH.
I watched the rt31p2 phone light go out and return on its own, i was convinced it was bad but being in the computer business, i know sometime even though a good hardware worked great for years does not mean it going to perform great with new technology, so all thim time i had ordered a new modem and was giving the rt31p2 the benefit of the doubt before i throw the towel in, i had it totally disconnected because when i had it connected outside with the modem i was getting just about the same test results as when it was hooked up in my house.

My initial setup was cable modem - rt31p2 - netgear router(firewall off, just used for wireless) - office connect 16 port hub (for xboxes and more computers)

My Motorolla SB 5100 arrived and hooked it up inside (without the rt31p2) to the netgear router and man i could tell the difference right away, my speed test was almost always over what the isp said am suppose to get , but here come the real test. For kicks i just plug the rt31p2 into one of the netgear lan ports (the netgear router was reset so it had dhcp and firewall on) and within a few seconds i got solid phone led and made a few calls, clear sound no static, Whooa i was intrigued. no more disconnecting calls.

I then hooked up my hub and never looked back since, did not even logged in the rt31p2 to change anything and still all my call test are now in the green, i can play online and talk on the phonw no worries.

Whats the purpose of this lenthy post, just wated other to know what worked for me and to make sure you have that DOCSIS 2.0 modem as it does make a difference, not just any DOCSIS 2.0 modems, read around and see whats worked for others.

I went searching and hear a lot of people say how there speeds have increased since they swithed to the Motorolla SB 5100 and now i can attest to that, hope this help someone out.

This is very interesting. It seems as though its the *combination* of an RT31P2 router with a DOCSIS 1.0 cablemodem that causes problems. Looking at JL's post and some of the previous posts, I believe I could have solved my problem by switching to a DOCSIS 2.0 cablemodem and keeping my RT31P2.

Apparently if you want to keep your DOCSIS 1.0, you have to replace the RT31P2 with a different router; I don't know the general rule for what you have to replace it with. I can merely observe that replacing it with the routing that is built in to the Vtech IP 8100-2 broadband phone works very well.

Hmm. I'm still tempted to call Time Warner and tell them I want to upgrade my cablemodem. Maybe my service will get even better! (though I really can't complain right now)

Even if you test at a good upload speed, Vonage voice packets are larger than what most test sites use. You may be able to reduce the quality of your signal, and stop dropping calls. After that, you can do some troubleshooting of you isp by running a traceroute. You may find a malfunctioning router in your path that the ISP can fix. Check your ISPs guaranteed upload speed. If you are not getting that, several insistent hours on the phone with them may get them to look into it.
